i looked into state populations vs. players in the NFL by state... and the South just dominates... i simply found out how many players per million people would make the NFL from each state... for example, there are 8.6 million people in GA and 84 NFL players who went to a high school in GA... so by my math there are just under 10 people of every million that will make the NFL frim GA.... 10 per million is a pretty solid number and puts them 6th overall... the top 5:

1) Mississippi 16/million
2) Louisiana 14.5
3) South Carolina 12
4) Alabama 10.5
5) Florida 10

Texas was 7th at just under 8 per million... and New York was pathetic with below 2 per million... the best northern states would be Ohio and Pennsylvania at a bit under 6 per (both fall outside the top 10).... Ohio edges out Penn by decimals... California has the most NFLers with 198 at just over 5 1/2 per... Virginia (7.5 per) and NC (6+) are 8th and 9th overall adding to the South's domination, while Washington comes in 10th at 6 per

And yet only the Cowboys and Dolphins have had continuously dominant teams from the South. Go figure.

Nice analysis, doesn't really surprise me.

The east isn't much of a hotbed for football. Definitely more of a basketball area.

yeah, you had to know the South was where it's at, but not by such a large margin, imo... because it's not even close.

Maybe it's good that they own the South, because after a lot of the state-by-state analyses I've done over in N&D, the South always seems to be on the wrong end of things.

How many players on NFL teams are actually from where they play?

Well, Mississippi has to be good at one thing besides lynchings.

I was talking about this with a buddy of mine today....the culture of football is much stronger in the south and midwest as compared to the northeast...

think of all the major colleges in NY and new england...and you have very few that are prominant at the national stage...really boston college and syracuse are it. and SU is borderline. But professional sports seem to be more popular in the northeast, while high school and college are more important in the south.
