*Detroit Tigers
*Minnesota Twins
*Chicago White Sox

Tigers still lead it but Minnesota is only 3 games out and Chicago is 3 1/2. So who do you think will win the Central?

what is the remaining schedule? the twins are seemingly a lock for tonite w/santana pitching at home (aren't they like 20-0 in his last 20 home starts?) so that would bring them 2 back.

and i know the twins have some games w/KC and maybe more w/tampa bay? and they wrap up with 3 against the white sox...

after today, 3 at home vs. oakland, 4 in cleveland, 3 in boston, 3 in baltimore, 4 at home against kc, and 3 at home against the white sox.

good for the twins:
1) liriano is pitching on wednesday
2) halfner is done for the season, making cleveland series easier
3) 2 toughest series (oak and chi) are at home
4) 2 more games to play than the tigers

bad for the twins:
1) only one day off
2) silva
3) juan rincon is falling apart

Playoff odds report

At least someone still believes in the Tigers.

Granted, it's a computer. But Detroit will take all the love it can get. Baseball Prospectus, which calculates the likelihood a team makes the playoffs by simulating the remainder of the season 1 million times, still sees the Tigers with nearly a 97 percent chance of getting in.

While the standings haven't shuffled much in a week, the percentages certainly have. (Last week's percentages in parentheses.)

American League
New York Yankees: 99.99 percent (99.91 percent)
Detroit Tigers: 96.97 percent (98.58 percent)
Oakland A's: 80.05 percent (93.86 percent)
Minnesota Twins*: 77.68 percent (53.61 percent)
Chicago White Sox: 24.96 percent (46.61 percent)
Los Angeles Angels: 20.19 percent (6.07 percent)

National League
New York Mets: 100 percent (100 percent)
St. Louis Cardinals: 86.16 percent (92.35 percent)
Los Angeles Dodgers: 82.04 percent (90.03 percent)
San Diego Padres*: 63.10 percent (48.68 percent)
San Francisco Giants: 14.06 percent (12.04 percent)
Philadelphia Phillies: 14.02 percent (18.24 percent)
Cincinnati Reds: 12.90 percent (15.50 percent)
Houston Astros: 12.82 percent (8.23 percent)
Florida Marlins: 8.13 percent (12.22 percent)

* – Wild card leader: Better known, in the AL, as the Battle for Second in the Central. Right now the Twins, at 59.53 percent, are well ahead of the White Sox, at 20.88 percent, and the Tigers, at 19.20 percent. In the NL, the Padres have extended their lead, too, to 36 percent, with the Dodgers, Phillies and Giants the only teams with greater than a 10 percent chance.

Same here. If i had to bet money I still wouldn't know. It's too bad one of these 3 teams will miss the playoffs.

I wish Liriano the best of luck in the long run. I hate the Twins breathing down the Tigers' neck, but it sure would have been fun to see what the 1-2 combo of Santana and Liriano could do in the playoffs.

I think you may have jinxed him. Say something nice about Mauer and Morneau now...please. Kidding of course. I was watching (I have MLB extra innings) that game and he was dealing before he felt the pain. I think that ultimately this guy is closer material like Joel Zumaya who was a starter his whole life until this year.

It's hard to jinx him since I posted this after seeing he was out for the rest of the season.

That's part of the problem with young pitchers now. The most innings they pitch before the major-league level is about 110-120 innings. They need to get more pitches and innings in. If not, you risk injury. Look at Verlander. They had to shut him down last year and skip a start this year. He looked awful yesterday. I don't think he's wearing down too much, but he's definitely in uncharted territory.

It's going to be a great two weeks to see who gets this thing. I think the White Sox and Tigers might pick it up a notch making it that more interesting. :D

twins-white sox final series of the year... probably going to be very meaningful (but hopefully the twins can extend their lead/clinch something before that series!)

cases for:

Tigers: 1 game lead, favorable schedule.

Twins: Been winning without Liriano, Santana, favorable schedule, best record since june.

White Sox: Starting pitching has come around past 10 games, experience, talent.

cases against:

Tigers: horrible record in the past 40 or so games, young inexperienced pitchers have broken down, hitters don't get on base(Granderson).

Twins: Radke and Liriano are gone, Silva is inconsistent at his best, back end of the rotation is young, bad, and inexperienced.

White Sox: Starting pitching has underachieved the whole year, 3 games behind, lack desire relative to minn and det, and now closer problems.
