Justin Morneau's season stats thru July 26:
AVG .313 (12th in AL)
HR 27 (6th in AL)
RBI 84 (2nd in AL)
OB% .359 (28th in AL)
SLG% .597 (7th in AL)
OPS .956 (9th in AL)
Morneau has lead the Twins to a 34-8 record over their last 42 games. With a batting average of .377, 16 Home Runs, and 45 RBI's since June 1st., Morneau merits strong consideration for the AL MVP.
Wasn't there a ton of bitching when the Twins chose Mauer over Prior in the draft a couple years ago? Stuff like 'Mauer will be a solid pro, but never measure up to Prior?' Can't blame them because of Prior's pre-MLB career, but seriously...

To me this is an INCREDIBLY close call. Both are deserving of major consideration. It really is an incredibly hard call. Morneau's power numbers and run production numbers give his the slightest edge in my book.
if things continue as they have for the past month, morneau will be remembered as more valuable than mauer. he's clutch and he has power. his bat has decided more games than mauer's. ortiz iz the shit, but he doesn't play in the field. i just don't think dh's should win mvp.
and phatj, you fucking rule. your threads are like the mashed potato sculpture in close encounters, if you know what i mean.

He's certainly my fantasy baseball MVP
I wouldn't be able to argue strongly against that, but it ain't gonna happen for any pitcher. Liriano should be the CY Young and Rookie of the Year, IMO.

you have to credit some of liriano's success to mauer, no?

mauer is a much more valuable player than morneau. as great as morneau has been, he hasn't even been the best player in the league at his position. giambi has been slightly better. morneau should be way down the mvp list. mauer should be right in the thick of it.
mauer's obp is almost 100 points higher as a freaking catcher. it's not that close of a race.

How so?
Giambi has a big edge in OBP...and the gap will likely be even bigger at the end of the season.

Who bats first between these two in the order? If it's Mauer....how many times has he been the run that scored, thus giving Morneau the RBI? In other words, how many of Morneau's RBI's have plated Mauer?
