Cardinals' La Russa arrested on drunken driving suspicion

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was arrested Thursday for suspicion of drunken driving after police said they found him asleep inside his running sport utility vehicle at a stop light.

The 62-year-old La Russa gave two breath samples and was determined to have a blood alcohol content of 0.093 percent, Jupiter police said in a statement. Florida's legal driving limit is 0.08 percent.

Undercover officers first saw La Russa's SUV partly in an intersection around midnight and not moving despite several green lights, police said. Officers knocked on the vehicle's window and La Russa did not initially respond.

The SUV was in drive and running, with La Russa's foot on the brake, police said. When he eventually woke up, the officers asked him to get out of the car.

He was arrested and booked in the Palm Beach County jail on the misdemeanor about 4 a.m., according to police and jail records.

The Cardinals play spring training games at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.

No doubt. Hopefully he took some valium or vicodin, too, at least.

in a perfect world, he would have been wearing his sunglasses and been picked up by the California Highway Patrol and they would have said, "Nice sunglasses."

I wouldn't think so, but you never know. He may do some out-patient shit, but he's not going away for a month or whatever. That's my guess anyway.

If he shaves his head and gets caught without any underwear stepping out of a car, does he go to rehab?

I doubt it. I don't know why it would.

And he'll leave St. Louis when he's damn well and ready. No one is going to push him out of town, especially after last year.

i more just meant that its pretty embarrassing for the birds organization... so i was curious if anybody thought that he might have to take a prolonged leave for some rehab, or counselling and then return later on in the season.

not that he'd be out of a job

Duncan could handle the job if Tony has to leave for a while, but I just don't see him missing any of the season. We'll see.

Not a big fan of Rome, but his rant on Star Wars fans was some of the funniest shit I've ever heard.

i'm always looking for an opportunity to rip on Tony Larussa, but some of you people are absurd. Rehab for blowing a .093? Getting canned from a professional baseball job for drinking? Embarrassing for the Birds organization? Get real. The guy is one of the best game managers in baseball and the Cardinals are (unfortunately for me) not stupid enough to cut the guy lose for blowing a tenth over the limit.

Now, if there were dead hookers in the back of the SUV and he had a mainline shoved into his peehole...that'd be another story.

i think the fact that he was passed out after blowing only a .093 is absurd.

of course it was probably more than just the alchohol. The guy is in his sixties, it was after midnight, and he was probably out in the sun all day. Maybe it was simply past his bedtime? I don't think this is a big deal at all.
