I was reading Bill Simmons the other day and his references to some rules that, according to him, make no sense and that should be changed. It got me thinking about the same thing. There are rules in all major sports that, for some reason or another, are still in the games, even though they are retarded (in a non-down syndrome kind of way). For instance:
MLB Baseball - Requiring the pitcher to pitch 4 consecutive balls instead of an intentional walk rule (like in college, high school, etc.). I know this would mess up a pitcher's pitch count, but it's a waste of time.
- No instant replay on close HR's.
- The DH Rule.
NFL - The ridiculous roughing the passer penalties issued for driving a QB into the ground. This is crap.
- The muff.
- The on-field official reviewing plays instead of a replay official in the booth.
College Football - The clock stopping after every first down.
- A player being down when his knee hits the ground.
- The halo rule (this was called twice in the Nebraska/Michigan game).
- The coach not being able to challenge a play.
- The wide hashmarks.
- *The 10 yard spot foul for holding. It could end up being a 20 yard penalty (worse than a personal foul).
College Basketball - Calling timeout while falling out of bounds (the most insane rule ever).
Hockey - The center line.
- 1 point for an overtime loss (a loss is a loss).
WNBA - The entire sport.
Anything else?
*Edited to include . . .

Also, don't you get 15 yards for roughing the kicker? This one was always the worst to me. Roughing the kicker is NOT worth a first down for the other team.

Depends. If it's inadvertant, you get 5 (running into the kicker, as opposed to roughing).

Still, even if it's intentional, it shouldn't be 15 yards. Who cares that much about the kicker?
Can you explain the intentional walk rule? I never knew there was a difference between MLB and college in this respect.
In college and high school, you tell the ump you're intentionally walking the guy and he automatically gets 1st base without the pitcher having to throw 4 intentional balls to him.

it may just be because my team lost because of it saturday, but that chris simms pass at the end of the bucs game should have been a catch IMO. i think it is silly that if he hadnt been touched as he was going down then it would have been a catch, but since he was touched then the ground cant cause the fumble.

I agree. Other times you see the ball barely cross the goal line then be knock out by a player, yet it's still a TD. Silly rule, bucs should have won (I hate the Skins).

What is this rule exactly?
If a punt returner drops a punt (muff), then if the punting team recovers they cant advance it.
Two other nfl rules that arent exactly stupid, but more strange:
- On a punt after the ball is touched by the punting team and the return team picks it up, even if they fumble it, and the punting team recovers, the return team keeps the ball.
- if a punt is fair caught at the end of the half or game the return team gets a free kick without a rush. I dont think this has ever actually happened, and i doubt the refs would actually know what to do.
And in college football it is stupid that pass interference is only 15 yards instead of a spot foul, it doesnt make any sense.
