I got a desktop calender for Christmas...here is today's fun fact:

1/6/1971:

On this date Referee Andy Hershock, 43, collapses at the Island Garden in West Hempsted, New York, while officiating an ABA game between the Memphis Pros and the New York Nets. A four year veteran of the league and father of 11 children, Hershock complained of dizzyness late in the first quarter and then passed out near the Memphis bench. Less than 20 minutes later, he's pronounced dead. The game is played to its conclusion and New York wins, 110-101.

2 things about this...first, why is this the freaking fact for January 6th? Its a fact about a mans death, what, no other significant things happened on this date throught the history of sports? Secondly, how could the Memphis Pros and New York Nets finish the game??? A man died pretty much on the court...didn't anyone think to say, "Hey, maybe we should play this game someother time..."

You need to understand that it's not just a game, it's a war. Lives may be lost, but the game must go on.

it sounds like the guy collapsed on the court and was taken in to the locker room

im sure the game resumed without everyone knoing this guy was going to die or was dead. if he had died roght then and there im sure the game would have been cancelled.

When John McSherry died, they called the game.
