I found this interesting:

The Dallas Stars' star (Mike Modano) made what have to be considered the most truthful comments by a player so far when he told the National Post that if this season is wiped out, "it's going to be tough to come back in October and say we're going to be tough and stand firm. You are going to have guys who are saying, 'what are we doing?' You're going to have guys chomping at the bit to get a deal done."

At that point, of course, the owners will be in an even stronger position. They won't care about losing part of next season after having wiped this one out and could have the option of using replacement players at that point.

If Modano is right, then the time for the players to get the best deal they can get is now.

i just sent this to the feedback dept. at the nhlpa site

You guys and the owners are ruining what is such a great game, you and the owners are the bad guys. You should make an agreement, and play hockey, cause it the fans that made you millions, it the fans that make the game great, and it the fans that you will ultimately have to answer to.

I'd like to thank Gary Bettman and the owners for completely ruining the NHL. Nice job assholes.

24% rollback...then what?
What in 3 years? We're right back where were are right now.

The owners and league were fucking stupid to believe that:
A) Hockey would go gangbusters in the new markets
B) The league would make enough from TV to justify the contracts
C) They should expand the league foolishly just to reap some franchise fees

Blow it up. Destroy it. It's fucked beyond repair at this point.
Only way to fix it is call Pete Rozelle and have him step in for Bettman.

im no business wiz, but if the players willing to give up almost 1/4 of their paycheck i think the owners should be trying their hardest to make this thing work this year. but im pretty sure we all know we wont see the nhl again, so what do they do, can the league? retraction?

The problem with the rollback is, like AS said, that it's good for the short term, but salaries would balloon back up in a few years. The main problem is that the owners want a hard salary cap and the players don't. The players offered to set a luxury tax and I'm not sure why the owners won't accept that, but I'm not really schooled in economics so what do I know. This is just frustrating though. I honestly thought when the lockout started they would hammer something out by mid December. I definitely don't see them playing this year and I'm not even sure about next season now.
