couple of questions....

is it really impossible to love both the Red Sox and the Yankees?
how come people are so obsessed with stats?
what's the use of the hall of fame?

there might be more to come.

anything is possible, but rooting for two direct competitors in any sport is dumb

Useful when comparing teams and players.

Hopefully you'll come up with better questions.

what does this have to do with anything?

why is it dumb? isn't it supposed to be about the game itself?

i just don't quite understand the importance and hype around it when someone gets inducted.

have you ever played sports? Did you try to win? Same concept with watching sports. You root for a team to win. Rooting for your favorite team's opponent doesn't make sense.

Mankind has recognized the achievements of those who excel in their chosen field for hundreds of years.

It sounds like you're not much of a sports fan in general, cono. Nothing wrong with that, but if you don't have a favorite team, and get excited watching them compete and try to win, it's pretty tough to explain why people do.

As for statistics, there is something unique about baseball among sports where the comparison of statistics is a key element. It might be because the batting part of the game is so individualistic, it could be because the game is so old and statistics have been kept through many eras and changes in the game. It's more than simply comparing players though.

i'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that i'm not much of a sports fan. i really do enjoy watching all sorts of sports, and even though most are way to slow paced for my liking, i've even enjoyed some typical US sports games. I just always found that having a favorite team or player or whatever kind of ruins the fun of watching a game. Because at that point you don't care how, as long as they do win. I'm much more interested in the how. Like with soccer i much rather watch a 0-0 game where both teams are trying everything to make that winning goal than a 6-0 game where the winning team totally outplays the losing team.

Most US fans would rather his or her team win or lose 6-0 than sit through a 0-0 game and worry about the outcome the whole time. Winning is everything in America. Your team could play the worst possible game and if they somehow pull out a victory, it is much more important than playing a sound game and losing.
