Yeah, I don't think passing on Matthews was a mistake at all.

The money thing makes more sense to me, and I'd expect him to be more open to trading up in the first round in the future because of it. I'm sure there are a few players Belichick would admit missing on with his strategy, even if Matthews isn't one of them.

No doubt, but I don't think he missed guys because of the strategy. He missed because the draft is a crapshoot and sometimes there are guys that are substantially better or worse than you expected. His "strategy" is simply not to reach on guys he doesn't think are worth the value of that particular pick/cost and collect more chips for the future. He's swung and missed plenty of times on personnel decisions, but so does everybody, and I think that's a separate discussion.

Let me be clear, I think Belichick is basically a genius and I admire him a lot. But I do think he sometimes overthinks things, and that's all I was saying.

Exactly.

It's easy to confuse decisions with outcomes. Don't forget Matthews went 26th for a reason: for his first three college seasons he was almost exclusively a special teamer, he played his senior year with two of the best linebackers in college football (Cushing, Mauluga), and there were real concerns about steroid use. These are not trivial concerns, and investing a first-round pick in such a profile - especially given questions about schematic fit - is clearly more risk than Belichick (and twenty-someodd others) was willing to assume.

Also, take a look at the defense New England put on the field today. Literally, every single starter was drafted (or signed as an UDFA). Remember how old and slow their defense was three or four years ago? And how fast and swarming they looked today? Belichick was able to completely rebuild his defense in the interim, while failing to post fewer than ten wins in any given season. The defense is fast, young, smart, and cheap. Such reconstruction would not have been possible but for all the additional draft picks (and yes, the inevitable misses that accompany drafting). You don't get those kinds of results by chasing the Clay Matthews of the world.

You've told me all this before, I was being tongue in cheek more than anything. I'm happy for you.

Also: Jermaine Cunningham

A few random thoughts on the Pats....

Over the last few years, Belichick has rebuilt the defense (and portions of the offense) and has remained a competitive, perennial Super Bowl favorite during that time.

Has he made mistakes? Sure, but who hasn't?

This current team (average age = 26) is now the youngest Pats team Belichick has ever coached, and arguably the most talented.

I've always said that Brady needs a fourth Super Bowl title, in addition to more individual stats, to cement his legacy as the greatest QB of all-time. Belichick - it appears - has now positioned Brady to accomplish this over the next four to five years.

It will now take some luck, but the talent, leadership and coaching is all there for Brady.

I'm not posting in this thread until after the Baltimore game.

That's correct, GH. It's painful to watch.

Hernandez, Wilfork... I'm sure it's more painful for them. I'm almost ready to overreact.

But why is this happening? If I was going to pick a lock of the week this morning, I think I would have taken the Pats by four touchdowns in this game.
