that's a pretty nice deal for his caliber. 9 Million a year and it's far from a cap hell contract.

The Globe is reporting that only $12 million is guaranteed.

also, a statement from Moss:

Quote:
"I'm very happy to get the business end of football done. Now we can concentrate on football.

"I want to take time out to thank all of the fans for their support and for wishing me well in my return to New England."

"I'm ready to get back. We have some unfinished business to take care of."

I'm glad that's done. I think Brady would have, righfully so, been fuckin pissed if they let him go.

Last year on draft day I thought bringing Randy in was mistake. Turns out the bigger mistake would've been not signing him this year.

your first mistake was thinking that taking a flyer on arguably the best receiver in the league in exchange for a 4th rounder, was a mistake.

but i know what yur sayin.

Yeah, I agree it was low risk, but after those two years in Oakland, I thought he was a douchebag. He just needs the right situation, and Oakland ain't it. I think Mother Theresa would've been pissed in Oakland the past few years.

In smaller news....

Quote:
Patriots sign WR Aiken
FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts (Ticker)—With Randy Moss re-signing, the New England Patriots also added a receiver on a much smaller scale Monday.

The Patriots signed Sam Aiken to a two-year contract.

Financial terms of the deal were not released, but the Boston Globe said the package had a minimum value of $2 million should Aiken reach all incentives.

New England has plenty of familiarity with Aiken, having faced him as a member of AFC East rival Buffalo twice every season for the past five years.

“Competing against Sam many times over the years, we know firsthand what he brings to us,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. “We’re glad he is a Patriot.”

The 6-2, 215-pound Aiken has only 19 career receptions in five seasons with the Bills. Considered a strong performer on special teams, Aiken was a fourth-round pick of the Bills in 2003.

“Coach Belichick reached out at around 11 that morning, and that was a big deal to him,” Alvin Keels, Aiken’s agent, told the Globe. “That call on the first day made Sam feel like the Patriots really wanted him.”

The defending AFC champion Patriots brought in Aiken on the same day that they re-signed Moss to a deal reportedly worth $27 million over three years.

so what is it that he brings to the team? it says above that he only has 19 career recepions over 5 seasons. is he a really good gunner or something?

I was hoping you would know. Maybe someone from Buffalo does?

Primarily a special teams player, Aiken made his mark covering kicks and punts on one of the leagues best special teams units. However, he has played a limited role on offense, and because he is in the last year of his contract it is rumored that he will be released for someone who can make a larger impact on offense.

New England Patriots

On March 3, 2008, Aiken signed with the New England Patriots.

how do they determine "the leagues best special teams unit?"

So, the Pats re-sign Moss and lose nearly their whole starting secondary. I think I might take the over in every single Pats game in 2008.

Might not be a bad bet, but they only lost 1 starter from the secondary.

Wasn't Gay still their nickelback? You gotta have a good third guy against teams like the Colts and Bengals.

I thought Wilson was starting instead of Sanders, but obviously I was wrong.

Yeah Gay was in there plenty, but I think Merriweather can be better. Of course, thats just a thought.

They're moving Merriweather from safety to corner?

They're gonna use him somehow... he did a bunch of that during the season, mostly dime. If he beats out Sanders for free safety then no, but he'll be out there either way.

Fair enough. They could also do a "big nickel" package with three safeties if that is truly Meriweather's position.

after Eugene Wilson and Chad Scott sign elsewhere, they will have lost their #1 corner (samuel), #3 corner (Scott), #4 corner (Gay), and #4 safety/#5 corner (Wilson).

like i posted earlier, they still have these guys in the secondary:

CB:
Ellis Hobbs (#2 last season/Return Man)
Brandon Meriweather (#3 or #4 toward end of season)
Mike Richardson (rookie who spent entire season on IR)
Antwan Spann (#6 corner/Special Teamer)

S:
Rodney Harrison (SS)
James Sanders (FS)
Brandon Meriweather (#3 safety)
Mel Mitchell (#6 safety/Special Teamer)
Willie Andrews (#5 safety/Special Teamer/Return Man)

i'm pretty sure they did some of that last season. Meriweather's natural and best position is at safety, but sanders has emerged as very qualified for the job next to harrison. Wilson was slowed from injuries two years ago and never was a true starter this past season. Its being speculated that the pats could move meriweather to corner fulltime next season, but i think they want him to ultimately replace rodney at SS at some point.
