Totally don't understand putting the game on the foot of the kicker from 40+ when you're at the 18 with forty seconds to go.

Considering that Gostkowski had the majority of the Pats' points, and that he had hit two from 50+ earlier, I thought that was the right call.

Optimistic view: Pats tend to get better as the season goes on, so an early loss is shocking, but they weren't going 16-0. I'd prefer to lose to the Cards vs. Baltimore... Use this one as a learning experience.

Another view: Losing Hernandez, the most important player on offense next to T. Brady, spells long-term trouble. Flashbacks to Super Bowl...

Eh, I'm with Kris on this one. It drove me nuts see Brady falling into the line with that much time left. It was a coaching decision more befitting Martyball than Bill's normal 'stomp on your throat' mentality. Either way, they didn't deserve to win that game.

What I really don't understand is what's going on with Welker. He's been demoted to backing up Edelman? Didn't even get on the field, I don't think, until Hernandez got hurt? Weird.

My thoughts on Welker:

He pissed off Bill internally (missing meetings, in bad shape, dropping balls at practice) and he's been demoted for such activity.....or

It's classic Patriots game planning...they treat every game differently and sometimes one player is not highlighted as much.

I dunno, but the Pats have bigger problems with Hernandez out for 4-6 weeks and with a troubling offensive line...

My problem with this is the fact that they're using Edelman over him. You guys would know better than I would, but is there ANYTHING he brings to the table that Welker doesn't? Anything he does better? Better rapport with Brady? Better run blocker, screen setter, anything?

If it was a matter of them using 1 WR sets I'd understand it. Or if they're running screens and need a better blocker in there I'd get that, too. From the outside (and admittedly, having only watched highlights and read recaps, etc), I haven't heard a satisfactory reason why Edelman would be getting playing time over Welker.

As an aside, did Welker show up out of shape, or is that conjecture?

We're all having trouble figuring this one out. Some people think it's the organization "punishing" Welker for some Tweets he made and such about the off-season franchise tag - this sounds like a bit of a stretch, but you never know with the Pats - they are ruthless.

The other thing could be that Edelman is simply outshining Welker at practice. I haven't heard or read or seen any indication that Welker is out of shape.

Again, your guess is as good as mine. But the Pats have much greater problems (Hernandez, o-line) than Welker/Edelman.

Could also just be age with Welker. He had the injury, all the hits he's taken over the years. He had a stellar year last year of course but you just never know. And if any team is willing to move on from an older veteran, it's the Patriots.

Right. Seems like you'd let him walk or trade him rather than pay him like a top 5 WR this year if you think Edelman can be Welker better than Welker can.

Very possible.

Branch is going to re-join the team...good sign for the offense.

And they waived Greg Salas, whom they kept over Branch to start the season. They also signed Winslow. Really odd beginning of the year for them in terms of personnel so far.

This all makes Viniateri look very smart for getting out of New England when he did

I heard or read that they never changed Branch's locker, which is right next to Brady's.

I don't have a good feeling about today's game. The o-line scares me.

If I were a lesser man, I would just edit this post.
