I love getting rid of Crawford and Beckett, but it kills me that Gonzalez is gone. He's a made-for-Fenway hitter that is a great guy to have on your team. The salary relief is super, but they have to manage it well.

Cherington certainly has put his mark on this team, though. Good for him, let's hope he's able to convince the front office to be smart with their spending and not screw it up.

The one fear people had with Gonzalez (that he wasn't cut out for this market) turned out to be true...he was never patient at the plate here, his power declined greatly, and he came off as a whiny bitch a little too often

This thread really got its sea legs at about the 150-page mark.

Man, I could read that section every day.

also, does recent events make Coach right, or wrong with this statement?

Any argument that says the Sox can't go after more expensive players down the road because of the A-Gon and Crawford signings is just plain dumb.

great signing; Sox can afford to make mistakes with $$, as it's not that big a factor. The money means nothing in Boston, NY Mets, Yanks...it means a lot in Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Florida and Minnesota - to an extent.

Love every part of it.

Well, actually, considering Barry Zito and Vernon Wells got literally the same deal Werth did, and considering Crawford is leagues better than them, yeah. Perennial all-star, defensive monster--you could be so lucky as to have him.

Oh. Well to be fair I was pretty damned happy to get Crawford too. Sure, we overpaid for him but overpaying is the only way you get those guys. Hindsight sure is a bitch, though.

Yeah, anyone who questioned the signings gets to gloat unabated in this instance, if only because of the stance taken by coach at the time.

I hate this "made for Fenway" shit about Gonzalez. If he was really made for Fenway they wouldnt have gotten rid of him. I'm glad to see Gonzalez go, the guy was absolutely useless if you needed him to get a hit late in a close game, and all he did was complain the entire time he was here.

The Crawford signing made no sense to me at the time, but I was just happy they were doing something so I didnt really complain. To be honest, I have no beef with Crawford or what he did while he was here, he was a victim of circumstance more than anything while here. He just didnt fit here as long as they had Ellsbury, and wasnt going to work. They were lucky to get out from under that contract. The guy played hard when he played though, and I never got that doesnt give a shit vibe from him that you got in spades from Beckett and Gonzalez.

I will gladly maintain that, at the time, Crawford was leagues better than Barry Zito, Vernon Wells, or Jason Werth, and that given his prior stats, any team should have been glad to have a perennial All-Star, plus-300 hitter with 40+ SBs every year. I mean, the basic gist of the post was that Crawford doesn't deserve that money--which is absolutely true from a financial standpoint, who the fuck deserves 180 million dollars--but to contest that on grounds of talent is pretty stupid given the context. Maybe he didn't fit with the team, maybe he couldn't handle the pressure of Boston, maybe making 180 million dollars does wonders for a guy's work ethic--whatever, but I think, considering Carl Crawford was an All-Star outfielder in 2010, the view that Carl Crawford was an All-Star outfielder in 2010 is hardly retarded.

None of which even holds a candle to the amazing "WE GONNA BUY DEM RINGS" 2010 vs. "Boston must move All-Star 1B to get out from under huge contracts" 2012 disparity.
