Beckett has back spasms, misses spring start By HOWARD ULMAN, AP Sports Writer 2 hours, 27 minutes ago
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP)—Josh Beckett left Saturday’s spring training game without facing a batter when he was bothered by back spasms as he warmed up.
The Boston Red Sox ace, preparing to face the Florida Marlins, seemed to lose his footing on his last pitch and called catcher Jason Varitek to the mound. Beckett put his right hand on the lower middle part of his back and soon was joined by manager Terry Francona and infielders.
The right-hander, the only 20-game winner in the majors last season, walked to the dugout without an apparent limp. The first batter for the Marlins was Hanley Ramirez, who was part of a seven-player trade that brought Beckett to the Red Sox in November 2005.
Manny Delcarmen replaced him on the mound and retired all six batters he faced.
Beckett had been healthy for almost all of his two seasons with the Red Sox. He made 33 starts in 2006 when he went 16-11 with a 5.01 ERA.
He started 30 games last year, improved to 20-7 with a 3.27 ERA and finished second to Cleveland’s C.C. Sabathia in the AL Cy Young Award voting. He went on the disabled list and missed two starts in May after tearing skin on his right middle finger. He won his first seven starts and was 9-0 before losing to Colorado on June 14.
In the opener of the Red Sox sweep of the Rockies in the World Series, Beckett allowed one run and six hits in seven innings of Boston’s 13-1 victory.
On Saturday, Beckett was scheduled to make his third start of spring training, but his first against a regular major league lineup. His first two games were against Boston College and a Minnesota Twins “B” squad.
In the 24-0 win over BC, Beckett struck out four in two perfect innings. Four days later, he allowed one unearned run and struck out five in three innings against the Twins.
Do you post this as straight up information (we get this first in Boston, so no need for the courtesy update) or to boast that our ace is hurt? Wouldn't you rather have the Tigers, Yanks, Sox, etc. compete at full health? Wouldn't that make for better games, more drama?
Don't you think the Tigers stack up well against a fully healthy Boston squad? Have more faith in your team.

regardless of anything above, he's on the road to recovery and Japan isn't out of the question, but its just that, questionable...

''No. We're going to make sure it's completely pain free. I can't even really if laying in one position too long, or sitting in one position too long or standing in one position too long it kind of goes backwards. I've got to keep moving and stuff like that.''
What do you do tomorrow?
"Whatever they want me to do. Probably the same as what today was.''
Did it respond to treatment? As you're standing here right now, is it feeling better?
"It's kind of numb right now. I've had six or seven icepacks on it this morning.''
"I was a lot more optimistic yesterday than I am today. A lot of that has to do with being in a (expletive) mood because I didn't sleep well.''

We did pretty well against you last year.....
That's my point. I hope the Tigers are healthy, the Yanks are healthy, the Sox and so on...I prefer to see the best players go up against the best players.

Channel 4 reporting that Beckett is out for Japan, which is fine by me. If Matuzaka is out for Japan as well I think that makes it a succesful roadtrip.

I'm all for any player on the Red Sox not making this trip. I'm sure no one in the Sox FO would complain if Manny (or anyone, for that matter) suddenly got "injured".
That's a horrible trade for the Sox. I've read that this isn't real, the FAN in NYC said the trade was being discussed and it took off. I understand if they want to get rid of Coco to get rid of the distraction but at least get something for him.

I agree. This would amount to giving Coco Crisp away. My guess is that the Mets offered Angel Pagan the the Red Sox for Coco Crisp. Probably the same way that the Cubs offered Jason Marquis to the Red Sox for Crisp and they said absolutely not. There's a difference between one team offering something for a guy and two teams working on a deal.
