Mets unveil model of new stadium 04/06/2006 1:46 PM ET

NEW YORK -- The highly anticipated future of Mets baseball has been unveiled, finally and officially, as the Mets showcased their digital dreams for tomorrow.
Highlighted by the exhibition of a stunning 360-degree, three-dimensional computer model, the Mets' next home was displayed at Shea Stadium's Diamond Club on Thursday in a historic and memorable ceremony.
As introduced by Mets chairman of the board and CEO Fred Wilpon, the Mets' new home will be an open-air, natural grass baseball facility, featuring intimate seating for about 45,000 fans within the planned 1.26 million square-foot facility.
The stadium promises to offer sight lines as impressive as any in Major League Baseball, while presenting vastly improved access, comfortable accommodations, new restaurants, suites and clubs and other attractions.
The new facility will be constructed in the parking lot east of Shea Stadium, behind the current stadium's outfield walls. It is expected to be in operation for Opening Day 2009.
Currently described as Mets Stadium, Jeff Wilpon, chief operating officer, said the team is actively pursuing a corporate sponsor to acquire naming rights of the facility.
The new stadium will pay homage to New York City and its baseball past, while honoring the Mets' history with numerous pitcher-friendly dimensions. The rotunda entrance of the Mets Stadium will evoke the tradition and aura of Ebbets Field, the former home of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Classic design elements of the planned facility include brick and limestone arches, building materials closely resembling the masonry of Ebbets Field, and a structural steel bridge motif that reinforces the club's connection to New York's five boroughs.
The facility is expected to create 6,000 temporary jobs during the duration of Mets Stadium's construction, while maintaining the 1,000 permanent full-time jobs currently in place at Shea Stadium.
The new stadium will also play a major role as the centerpiece of the planned revitalization of the Flushing area and the proposed business and housing redevelopment of Willets Point, the demarcation line of which begins adjacent to the stadium's planned border on 126th Street.
Shea Stadium, which hosted its first game on April 17, 1964, is the sixth-oldest facility currently in operation in the Major Leagues.

Any Mets fan has to love this. As many good memories as I have at Shea, that place is done. Especially cool is that the team is financing 100% of the stadium and taking over maintenance costs from the city.
In five years, when you get laid and grow up, you should go back and read some of these posts and if you've turned into a decent person you'll realize how much of an asshole you sound like right now

im one of the few people in earth who actually LIKE shea stadium, love the place, but the new park looks amazing. cant wait to go there for my once a yr dodger game!!!

the ebbetts field angle is really cool.
Thank God Shea is a thing of the past.
It does kind of resemble most new stadiums though. Oh well new generation cookie cutters in some rights I guess. Some features are just too good not to copy.
Wilpon needs to get over his obsession with all things Brooklyn Dodgers....but this place looks pretty cool. IMO, it looks better than the renderings of the new Yankee Stadium.
