career stats going in to 2012: HR-454 H-2615 RBI-1561 1999 MVP, 7 time All-Star
roid free?
More than likely, can't say definitively of course I have no idea. He's been a great hitter his entire career one of the best in the game without question. I don't have any reason to believe he was on PED's other than maybe the 1999 season but everyone was hitting tons of HR's back then too.
He's claimed that he never juiced and there's no reason for me to doubt him. Being one of the top 3 switch hitters in the history of the game, along with Mantle and Murray, I say Chipper's a lock. Maybe not a first ballot inductee, but he should be a HOF'er.

Oh I think he's first ballot, no question. He's been really good to the media, and that generally helps.

I would love to see what he could have done had he not played 7 or 8(?) years in the Japan leagues before coming over here. Hopefully he'll get to 3,000 though and get into the HOF.

Breaking into the league at 27 and still reaching 3000 would be a ridiculous accomplishment. Most players in the 3000 hit club have between 500 and 1000 hits before they turn 27. Even at the lower end of the that range, Ichiro would already be at 3000.

I hope you're right. Staying with the same team his entire career should help his cause as well.

Some real gems in this thread from four years ago. Jason Bay is absolutely fucking laughable, as is the idea that Halladay won't get it.

They're not locks for the hall of fame either. But as evidenced by "coke zero" I have little regard for the actual topic listed in the thread title. It's more of a guide than a specific instruction.

Check out the piece Tom Verducci did over at CNNSI.com There have only been 4 players in the game who have done what he has for one team. He really shows how much he wanted to be a Brave for life and how he restructured and worked his contract out to be advantageous for the Braves as well as being compensated fairly. Can't ask for more from a star player.
"Just how rare was Chipper Jones? First consider that he is a lifetime .300 hitter (.304) who has hit more than 450 home runs (454). Only 10 players ever retired as a .300 hitter with 450 home runs. But now consider that he did all that damage for only one team, and guess how many players ever did that. The answer is just four: Lou Gehrig for the New York Yankees (1923-39), Mel Ott for the New York Giants (1926-47), Ted Williams for the Boston Red Sox (1939-60) and Stan Musial for the St. Louis Cardinals (1941-63). That's it -- and all a very long time ago." - T. Verducci
Lifetime 300 hitter FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE PLATE. Guy is ridiculous.

I'm still not sure about Roy Halladay. That said, he's got a couple more years at least. He's at 188 wins. Can he get to, say, 250?

I'm obviously extremely biased, but can you really argue that he's the best pitcher of the last decade? To me, that alone puts him close to getting in. And this isn't like Jack Morris where none of his other numbers back it up when people call him the best of his time. His advanced stats are ridiculous (ERA+ of 138 is 18th all-time) and picking up his 200th win and 2000th K this year will give him a couple decent milestones as far as traditional stats go.

He's certainly among the best pitchers of the last decade, but that alone does not qualify a person for the Hall. I'm just looking at the bigger picture, in which (at least currently) he has stellar but a relatively small pool of stats, and compares with guys (like, say, Roy Oswalt and Tim Hudson) who are definitely not getting in.
I think he will likely get in with 4-5 more years at his typical pace, but it's not a "lock" right now. That's all I was trying to say.

He's 34. He should be able to average 15 wins per season the next four seasons.

To look at it another way, if Halladay retired after last season, is he in? Or even with one more season under his belt?

Again, I would say he's close right now, but I know that's at least partially because I want him to get it.
His stats are actually fairly similar to Oswalt and Hudson, but he still compares favourably to them in pretty much every single category. Halladay also has a pair of Cy Young awards and finished 2nd in the voting twice, which certainly helps his case.
