"Yet, Rodriguez called it, "a smart play, one I would've made again. In the heat of the moment, you do things sometimes out of instinct," Rodriguez said. "I thought it was a smart play, and we almost got away with it. We put an umpire in the position of having to turn over a call like that in Yankee Stadium. It gave us a shot. (Umpire) Jim Joyce told me, 'if you'd knocked the crap out of (Arroyo) it would've been legal because he was in your way.' So if I had a chance to do it again, I would've tried to run him over. Even though I probably would've hurt someone with my weight and velocity, dropping my shoulder down."

Funny that a New Yorker makes a comment like this and you attack Boston fans for having no class....

what's wrong with that? the ump told him that would have been the right thing to do..........

Is anybody else questioning this guys sanity now? What the hell are they teaching him in NY?
notice the past tense: "thought"
he's saying at that time, he thought it was as smart play in the heat of the moment.
not exactly a difficult concept to grasp...........

He obviously still thinks its a smart play if he would have done it again
he would have done it again in the heat of the moment.
read on where he says, "So if I had a chance to do it again, I would've tried to run him over."

You have to question wether or not Jim Joyce actually said that to ARod, what umpire would tell a player to "knock the crap" out of someone? The only time that it is legal to run into a player in baseball is if they are impeding your path to the base. If you look closely at the picture, Bronson wasn't within the basepath so ARod would have had no right just to bowl him over.

Why are you all getting your panties in a bunch with A-Rod saying it was a smart play? If the ump doesn't see the hand, the play stands and, chances are, NY goes on to win that game.
Dangerous play? Yes. Against the rules? Of course. Dirty play? Yup. But it wasn't dumb, by any means.

Funny, that pretty much fits my definition of dumb. :shrugs:
Is it dumb if it would have worked? That's what I don't understand. If you're a Yankees' fan, and the play worked and NY wins the pennant, are you still calling the play dumb and criticizing him for it? If you say yes, me thinks you're lying.
I think most people would admit he make a mistake.........but to call him a liar and classless and whatever else guys like Schilling and Millar had to say is taking it too far.
the guy was running as fast as he could, and had a split second to figure out a way to avoid getting tagged. he chose poorly, and he was called out.
why people feel the need to attach more meaning to it and say the play is indiciative of his character is beyond me.

That's what I said back in October. If he'd just been a man and run him over, it would have been legal and he would have been safe. Instead, he did the bitch move.
BTW, if Arroyo wasn't in the basepath, Mankewich or whatever the fuck his name is certainly was.
