there's no way ryan braun is getting it. i don't see hanley winning, either. pujols is having probably one of the top three seasons of his career so far.
quentin/a-rod should be an interesting race down the stretch. their numbers are pretty similar right now.

You think Hanley will get it? He isn't ready for that yet. Hopefully next year. But he has struggled miserably with RISP. And his average has been steadily falling for awhile. Wait til next year, when he pulls 40/40 and hits .300. Then we'll talk.

As a Phillies guy, trust me this is very hard to say, but just even looking at ESPN's commentary on this, I'm not sure how I can see that Chase Utley's still being considered a contender for MVP just as much as anyone else. Yes, he came like a bull out of the gate and everyone was ready to give the damn thing to him after a month. But after hitting .352 in April, he's subsequent averages have been .259 (May), .266 (June), .278 (July) and an anemic .220 so far in August. After 18 HR and 47 RBI by the start of June, he's hit 11 HR and 34 RBI since, and yes, this latter period has been significantly longer than those first two months.
If he's really the leader we ultimately need him to be, he's gotta finally admit to Manuel that he's hurt and take however much time away he needs.
edit: a guy I work with was telling me last night he thinks Jimmy Rollins' recent behavior is all part of a thing that he's basically looking for a way to get traded out of town, doesn't wanna be here anymore, but I highly doubt that.

Id say hes in the running, unless this back problem keeps him out for a long time
albert pujols is football fields better than him this year, and is on a team that might be in the playoffs as well (2.5 back of the brewers in wild card). heck, philly is only 1.5 back in the division, so i guess pat burrell should be a leading candidate, too.
sure, he'll finish in the top five of voting or something like that, but that doesn't mean he's the league's best player.

thatst he problem with the award, its the most valuable, not the best player. I wish theyd just rename it Player Of the Year
Braun probably isnt thee mvp, but hes got a shot at it like the other candidates. dont diss cuz, michael. joo power!!

I think that, in the 4-game set against the Cubs at the end of last month when the Brewers got man handled, Ryan Braun showed me why he shouldn't be the MVP. The guy all of a sudden couldn't hit a fastball and easily cost the Brewers at least one game (Game 1, which is a 2-game swing in the standings) with his horrible defense.
He's a perfect example of why errors can be a silly stat. He hasn't made an error all year, but his numbers don't reflect the amounts of balls that he has butchered or taken wrong angles on which don't show up as errors.

The whole team was completely overwhelmed that series. Let's see what happens in September when they play the Cubs 6 times in 12 days. That will be a much better scale to rate Braun's MVP merit.

I assume you're referring to Braun's ill-advised dive at a fly ball, coming up about 2 yards short of actually catching it. Braun's made a couple plays like that this year, but all in all his defense has been just fine. He's obviously still learning the position, but his defense overall is anything but horrible. He can cover a ton of ground and has gotten progressively better as the year went along (minus a boneheaded play here and there). And generally speaking, he's been money in the clutch with the bat. Which in turn reminds me of why the RISP stat is a bit misleading. Bruan's RISP batting average may not be any different than his overall BA, but A LOT of his hits have come when the game was on the line, not when the team is up 6 or 7 runs and you're just piling on.
That said, I don't think he's really had an MVP season. He's just had what I hope proves to be an "average" season for him. Which I'll take every year for the next decade.
