I mostly post in the NHL thread, but I would love to hear about the greatest game you’ve ever seen in person. Maybe even talk about the experience, the atmosphere…

I assume that a lot of you don’t even know what hockey is  , but I’ll mention mine anyways for the guys in the nhl thread.

It was actually last year in a regular season NHL game. I spent a ridiculous amount of money to fly up to Montreal to see my best friend. At the last minute we decided to go see the Rangers-Habs game, and paid dearly for our tickets (got them through a scalper). About the halfway point of the game, my team – the habs – we’re losing 5-0. My best friend and I we’re so pissed that we spent our money that we were discussing wether or not we should just leave and get drunk to forget this evening. In the middle of our debate someone from the habs scored, and we decided ah fuck it lets watch the rest of the game. The Habs ended up coming back to win the game, and it was the greatest comeback in their entire 100 year history So needless to say we were glad that we stayed. The atmoshpere in the building was absolutely nuts. when they tied it 5-5, the guy behing me jumped up so quickly that his cell phone went flying in the air to the lower section...he didn't even care

Mat 4th 07 playoffs. Buffalo Sabres vs. NY Rangers

Quote:
Game 5 shifted back to Buffalo, and the strong goaltending from the two young keepers continued. Miller turned away 14 shots through the first two periods until an innocent looking shot by Martin Straka snuk over Miller's shoulder and hit the goal cam in the back of the net with just over 3 minutes left in regulation. Lundqvist again seemed unbeatable, having stopped the first 36 shots he faced. However, the 37th Buffalo shot was one that Sabres fans will always remember. The Sabres pulled their goaltender for a 6 on 5 advantage with the faceoff in the Rangers zone and less than 15 seconds remaining in the game. Buffalo co-captain Chris Drury won the draw and with 8 seconds left found the back of the net on a Tim Connolly rebound and through a Thomas Vanek screen. The game was not over however, and still another hero would be crowned on this Friday night in the Queen City. With Blair Betts off for hooking less than 5 minutes into overtime, Lindy Ruff gave Maxim Afinogenov a chance to redeem himself for his poor play. Afinogenov came through, getting off a quick slapshot from the point that beat Lundqvist five hole. Afinogenov took several strides before diving across center ice, and his jubilant teammates joined him in celebration.

what that description fails to mention is Drury scored with 3 seconds left in the game, IIRC. During the overtime break, my friend and I just stood there looking at the ice, not believing what we just saw.

probably the game when the giants, through a kent graham to amani toomer touchdown, ruined the broncos' perfect season.

I've seen lots of football games in my life. World Cup, Champions League, Tour de France, Paris-Roubaix, thousands of Belgian football games, some French, some Dutch, some English, some Spanish, some German, but one takes the top.

FC Barcelona - Real Valladolid

Real Valladolid are not a bad team, the week after this game, they beat Real Madrid for example. But this season, there's simply no stopping FC Barcelona, there's simply no stopping Lionel Messi & Samuel Eto'o. I went to visit Barcelona, but mainly to see the football team. Whereas Man United have always been my favourite team, Barça has always been my second, the gap between the two sometimes big (especially when Barça had like 10 Dutch players some 10 years ago), but sometimes so narrow you could hardly tell what I prefer. This year, the football Barça is playing is simply from another planet. I flew in on Saturday. The game was scheduled on Sunday. But a couple of days before the game, they moved it to Saturday. I was shocked, but soon started working on a plan, which worked perfectly. We landed at 8pm at Girona airport (about 1h15 from Barcelona). We managed to be at Camp Nou (the stadium) at 9.30, game was at 10. You cannot even begin to describe the relief I felt when we arrived in time to hear that majestic hymn sung by all Barça fans in their own Catalan language, their nation, their pride, their club.

The game was incredible. Valladolid started off well, but as soon as Barça got their passing game going, the magic was all over the place. When I watched Messi play that night, I knew I'd tell my grandchildren how I saw the greatest player on our plant play in the same way my grandparents & parents tell how they've seen Pele & Maradona, albeit only on television. Passes, 1-2's, fabulous dribbles, I saw it all. Half time score : 4-0, 4 goals by Samuel Eto'o, 3 assists by Messi. Second half… you'd think Barça just relaxed… forget it, everyone tried to get on the scoresheet, not by doing it all alone, no, instead by playing the most wonderful combinations, the stuff you dream about when you think of Maradona or the Brazil team of the World Cup 1970. Some actions that would have resulted in nominations for goal of the season ended up just missing target or saved by the keeper, but it was orgasmic to watch. At the final whistle, it ended 6-0. Unbelievable.

I've seen lots of football in my life, live and on television. But I do not think I've seen a team play better & more beautiful football than the Barcelona team of this season. I'm going back to see another game early March. If it is anything close to what I saw that night in November, I'd be more than happy.

I've been to a lot of hockey games over the years, I think this one takes the cake.

Oct 29, Detroit @ Anaheim

This game featured star studded performances on both sides. Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored twice for the Wings, with Hossa assisting on both Datsyuk goals. Not to be out done, Teemu Selanne had a hat trick, and Ryan Getzlaf assisted on all 5 goals, and tied a franchise record for most assists in a game. The game was back and forth, with lead changes, momentum swings, big saves and big time performances by some of the best players in the NHL right now.

Ohio State-Penn State @ Ohio Stadium in 2002.

The Michigan game that year was ultimately more important and more satisfying, but the Penn State game was the most exciting.

It was a defensive battle throughout most of the game with the Buckeyes trailing at the half 7-3. Penn State opened the second half with the ball and on their first possession, Zack Mills (I think) had a pass picked off by Chris Gamble (starting on both sides of the ball for the first time that day) who returned it for a touchdown and put the Buckeyes up 10-7, a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The crowd, especially on the Gamble interception, was insanely loud that day. It was a cold day, but it was one of those 3:30 starts where it was dark by the second half. Most exciting game I've been to.

Second place: Cavs over Pistons, Game 6 ECF 2007.

I've seen a lot of games at Yankee Stadium.

I saw Game 6 of the 81 World Series, I saw the Yankees come back from an 8-0 hole in the 2nd inning to beat the White Sox once, I saw a 10th inning walk-off grand slam once, I saw Dave LaRouche pitch lob-balls against the Brewers and strike out Gorman Thomas (which led to Gorman smashing his helmet into a million pieces with his bat  ), and I even saw Morgana The Kissing Bandit get Don Mattingly on Monday Night Baseball.

But the best game I've ever attended was a late season game in 1999 (I think, might have been 98) against the Red Sox when Pedro Martinez pitched a 1-hitter against one of the greatest lineups ever put together on a single team. He struck out 17 Yankees (a record), and even the Yankee fans cheered Pedro's utterly dominating performance at the end of teh game. Pedro just made some of the best hitters in the game look like kids who needed glasses for 2 hours.

the baylor upset over a&m in 2004 off a 2-point conversion at the end of OT was pretty kickass. the only time i've ever rushed the field and got to jump on a goalpost. i remember being at a cowboys game against the giants in 05 i think where jose cortez kicked a game-winner in OT. seeing baylor beat k-state last year when michael beasley scored 44 was cool (i think that was his career-high).

the coolest had to be the baylor-kansas football game in 2006. baylor scores 18 points in the last nine minutes to win 36-35. im down on the field in the corner of the endzone waiting to go into the locker room for postgame interviews, and baylor's driving, down 35-29 with less than two minutes, coming down to the side of the field im on. im literally five feet from the front pylon. so here baylor comes, and with about a minute to go baylor's receiver literally dives over that front pylon to score the game-winner, and there i am in the game-winning photo the next day on the front page of the sports section, recorder in hand and press pass around my neck, supposed to be the unbiased journalist, jumping five feet in the air pumping my fist screaming.

easily the AFC Championship game in 1995, Steelers vs. Colts.

Which is in fact my first Steelers game I've ever attended. What a good one to be at.

My favorite NHL game I attended was Rangers/Devils in the fall of '06. Rangers were losing 2-0 going into the 3rd period... then they scored 3 goals in the span of 90 seconds to take the lead and win the game. That was fantastic.

I was also at that Knicks-Bulls game in 93 when Starks dunked on Jordan. Classic times. :P

VT vs. Miami night game at Lane Stadium in 2003. It was the loudest football game I have ever attended. VT completely shellacked Miami and the crowd never let up either.

2003 Sunday Night Football Atlanta Falcons vs Carolina Panthers.

The end of a brutal year was upon us and Mike Vick came back off the leg injury that in several weeks would be the main reason Dan Reeves would be fired. I was sitting in the sixth row from the visiting sideline next to Andrew Jones with my Dad on the right. Vick leads them on a tremendous drive in the 4th quarter and levitates into the endzone on a spectacular run to tie it. Then Kevin Mathis wins it in overtime on an interception return.

Best game I've paid to be a part of. The loudest experience I've ever had in the dome or at a sporting event.

Close second was in Atlanta Virginia Tech vs Georgia Tech when Va Tech came back in the 4th quarter down 24 pts to win. Reggie Ball ran out the back of the end zone. It was unbelievable. I remember CB Kenny Scott laying one of the finest open field hits on a KR I have ever seen.

Third, probably some Braves regular season games in the early 90's vs LA.
