usually they only show the brawls that happen (was it in atlanta the latest highschool fight took place?)

not so here

the gist of the story is this:

a team traveled two hours to play, and the game was delayed one hour because one of the home teams players mother had passed away. cervical cancer had got the best of her and they removed her from life support. it happened so fast the young man didnt have time to grieve, so he went to the game he was supposed to play. when asked if he wanted to sit on the bench, he told the coach he wanted to play.

rules of highschool basketball states a player has to be on the pregame roster, if not, and he plays, the other team is awarded two freethrows (a technical)

darius mcneal volunteered to shoot the free throws in a tight contest at that point. his first free throw sailed a whopping 2 feet and then rolled down the lane. the second was a flick of the wrist with the ball again doing a slow dribble.

the home team eventually won by 15 pts

its a nice story no doubt, but as a member of the media i know the look a writer gets when he's handed this kind of thing. honestly, any self respecting individual that knows the situation would do the same thing. doesnt make it any less cool and blah blah but writers (myself included) treat stories like these as if you were just served up a 20 mph grapefruit from randy johnson from two feet away to win the world series. just easy money.
