The current incarnation of the Arena Football League is an arena football league founded in 2009 to replace the original Arena Football League, which collapsed following that league's 2008 season. The league, originally launched as Arena Football 1, was formed with 16 teams: existing teams from the original AFL and arenafootball2, an existing team from the American Indoor Football Association, and several new teams or markets. Though the current league was founded separately from the original Arena Football League, the current AFL bought all the properties of its predecessor in a bankruptcy auction in December 2009, allowing it to brand itself as a continuation of its predecessor.

The league, which changed its name to the Arena Football League after purchasing the assets of the original AFL and af2, will play by the same rules the AFL and af2 played by in their respective final seasons. The new AFL has its headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma and will play its games from April through August, a schedule similar to the af2 and the pre-NBC era AFL.

The AFL merged with the NFL 40 years ago.

It's weird how Spokane's team got in and Boise's didn't. The two cities are about the same size. I guess BSU just drowns out the attention.

Maybe it's for the better, though, their team name was horrible.

It's funny that when they started this league they were marketing it as Arena1.

And even doing so after December getting the AFL assets and etc.

I was wondering if they'd just scrap the Arena1 name and just name it as the AFL.

Good for them

not American Football League.

It seems like this could be really popular if they showed it on the right channels.

I know SJ is NoCal. but

Future Expansion
In a conference call in late February 2010, commissioner Jerry Kurz announced that as of the present time, four markets have been in serious negotiations for 2011 season expansion teams. Those markets are as follows:

* Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
* Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (This would bring back Jon Bon Jovi's Philadelphia Soul)
* Denver, Colorado (This would bring back John Elway's Colorado Crush)
* Southern California (Why bring back the LA Avengers???)

Teams which left AFL for another league

* Arkansas Twisters - originally announced as AF1 member, but left to join Indoor Football League and changed name to Arkansas Diamonds.
* Central Valley Coyotes - originally announced as AF1 member, but no longer listed on site. No word yet which league they will play their future games in.
* Tri-Cities Fever - originally announced as AF1 member, but left to join Indoor Football League and reached an agreement to keep the Fever name and logo.

Yeah probably, don't worry.

Television

AFL has signed a deal with NFL Network to carry a weekly Friday night package. The deal lasts for one year.[19]
