I hope I'm not derailing this too bad, but here goes. I'm finally getting into golf, tonight after work will be my 3rd trip to the driving range this week. So I'm going to be looking for a starter set of clubs, mostly likely used from craigslist. So being cheap is a big plus, but is there any basic advice you guys can give me like brands to stay away from, etc. Thanks.

Just make sure when it comes to irons you buy cavity back irons as opposed to blades. They are much easier to hit. I would only get the 5I-SW and I would buy a few hybrids in place of the 3I and 4I.

Depending on how much you want to spend you can get some great deals on brand new irons from 2007 that are still on the market. I would highly reccomend the Taylor Made R7 draw Irons. They are designed to reduce slice which is a common problem for new golfers. I have the regular r7's and they are very easy to hit.

As far as Drivers are concerned Taylor Made, Cleveland and Calloway all make easy to hit models such as the Burner, Launcer, Diablo, Big Bertha, R7, R5.

You can probably find those as used on eBay. However right now if you buy a 2009 model from either of those companies they will give you a free 3 wood or 5 wood as well. A really good deal. Those current drivers all cost $299 at most retail outlets. The fairway woods usually run $179-$199, so basically you get both for $300 vs $500 usually.

The most important club in your bag is always the putter. You will use it more than any other club. For a begining golfer I would suggest any type of mallett head that has a nice alignment aid to it. The Odessy 2 ball, the Ping Craz-E and the Cleveland VP4 or VP5 come to mind. The Cleveland also has a visual aid that ensures your hands are in the right position and that your eyes are directly over the ball when you putt. I've used it for 2 years and can't imagine I will ever replace it.

Sorry for the long winded response but hopefully that helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Also watch out for counterfeit clubs. Very common these days. Always look for a serial number down on the hosel (Near where the shaft and clubface meet).

That's to say I WAS a 2.6 last week...I am now a 3.5 after a 70 and a 71 dropped off to be replaced by two 77s (dunno if our handicap system is the same as the US/Europe).

I reckon if a lot of you had the luxury of playing 3/4 times a week like I was in summer, you'd go okay too.

I drive it pretty well and my putting is red-hot when it's on but hell, my chipping is terrible. Like 20 handicap terrible. I really need lessons, or at least practice it more.

I've bought the Wilson Smooth so i'll check in after the weekend with how it went.

Anyone here had a hole in one? Or what's our most memorable golf moment? I haven't, closest is about 2 inches on holiday. Longest shot i've holed was a 75yard lob wedge and probably proudest moment was driving a 320 yard par 4 and holing the putt. I must admit it was downwind and in the grips of a bone dry summer, but hell i'll take it.

nice shootin'

35 years of golf and never had a hole in one  I've had one about 2 inches away and many inside a foot or so...I holed out a 7 iron from about 165 a few years ago..

like it was said above, stick with cavity backs...I also recommend the taylor made r7 draws..you can buy those new now for about 300 a set at Golfsmith or Dick's sporting goods..also, as a beginner, you dont need to be buying boxes of Titleist Pro V1s or Nike Black balls....spend a lot of practice time hitting wedges and putting..if you do buy a new set, get fitted...if you buy used, make sure the grips are good or get them replaced...

Never had a hole in one, like yourself I've had one within a couple of inches but that's about it regards par 3's. I've holed out once from around 100 yds before.

I'm glad the Taylormade R7 Draws are getting a few reccomendations here, I'm looking at upgrading my Irons later this year and they were the set I was looking at.

Try the regular R7's as well. You may not need the draw version. Both are so easy to hit.

Double eagle.....that is impressive.

The new driver went great guns today. Only hit two bad drives, one of which unfortunately ended up in someone's front lawn. Was 5 over after 3 holes and finished up with a two-over 73 off the back tees with 23 putts and only five GIRs....some serious scrambling.

Double Eagle=Luck

Impressive round. 23 putts makes sense with only 5 GIR's. Sounds like your short game was on.

It's not luck if you dialled it in, right? Unless you banked it off a tree/a fellow golfer/the clubhouse etc.

That's the thing that frustrates me about hole in ones - I am much less likely to have one than a higher handicapper is. Whereas I would have to land it on a sixpence, a 70-year-old man could roll it up off all sorts of hills/paths/whatever. Hence why my mates grandad has 6 or something ridiculous.

Maybe today....

Thinking about it, the regular R7's would probably be better, if a shot goes wrong it tends to be a hook rather than a slice.

Played my 1st 9 this year -- a 47. Not great by any stretch, but then again I am a terrible golfer and the last few years I have only played a few rounds at best.

No hole-in-one for me either, though I have dropped a 7-iron from about 150 once (sadly I think I only saved a par on the hole).

Oddly, the only thing I do well is chip (well, putting too). My buddy is a 5 handicap or so, but I actually have a slightly better short game. However, I am short off the tee and can't hit an iron below about a 7 reliably, which means I get up and down for a bogey with some regularity, but rarely for par.

Carded a 107 at a society day at my home course (I have only been a member there for about 3 weeks but still!)

I'm looking at this set. Yes I'm on a budget here, so that will probably trump all other considerations seeing as my wife isn't too thrilled about me taking up golf right now.

Is it that big of a deal to start with junk?

What makes it tough is there is no set budget. I'm basically going to spend what I think my wife will grudgingly tolerate. (Actually a guy is supposed to come buy one of my surfboards today for $250 which would certainly help my cause.)

But I'm thinking I've got to spend as near to like $100 as possible. Which is basically nothing I know, but craigslist pops up with old crappy sets people never use all the time...

250 is plenty for a good used set of clubs...go with a brand name if you can and dont go for any knockoffs....you're in Lauderdale, right? I think they have a store there called Edwin Watts...check them out if you can..Those Taylor Made irons we spoke of earlier would be a good deal for a starter..easy to hit and will only make you better if you put in the time..

Yeah we have an Edwin Watts. I know my wife won't go for $250 and I don't really blame her. She's seen me get obsessive over a hobby before. Plus I'm selling that board as a sign of good faith because I bought another board lol. I'll probably just keep looking.

I understand wives and budgets, no worries....keep looking..the callaway Big Bertha irons from the late 90s are good clubs and can be had for cheap if you can find them...just dont buy the ones you posted...you'll end up hating golf and give it up...although, I wish more people would so I could play under 5 hours
