out of the major US sports (sorry, i dont watch soccer or other sports outside the US)

NHL
MLB
NBA
NFL


NHL to me is by far the most exciting, followed by NBA, NFL and MLB

Small market teams have been fairly competitive recently in the playoffs. Rays of 08, Rockies of 07. And go back further in the last decade and both the Diamondbacks and Marlins beat the Yankees in the World Series.
