Pretty sure it was Jordan, Magic, Ewing, Barkley and Malone starting with Bird, Pippen, Drexler, Robinson, Mullin, Stockton and Laettner on the bench....
How in the world Bird wasn't starting is a travesty of epic proportions!

Yeah, from what I recall Bird was well past his prime by then, and I think he retired soon after.
What I always found funny about the Dream Team is how Laettner got chosen as the college player over Shaq.
That was kind of a joke. What is even more surreal is the fact that Bobby Hurley apparently dominated the Dream Team in warm ups and he....sometimes life...(I guess it don't leave you alone).

Well, all I can say there is that Shaq maybe had flaws in his overall game coming up and truely Laettner is one of the greatest college basketball players of all time. I can imagine they looked at both of them and said...for the international game and given the folks we already have on the team... we might get more out of Laettner.

exactly, at no point would anyone ever say shaq was a better college player than laettner. plus, with ewing and robinson already on there, do you need three centers? laettner could have played C and PF so it was a logical choice

I remember hearing that Shaq wasn't picked because they already had Ewing and Robinson, (like someone said above) plus Christian appeared to be more versatile at the time...but it is funny to see in retrospect. Who have though Shaq, Christian, and Alonzo Mourning (Top 3 picks in the 92 draft) would end up playing on the same team. In Miami of all places.
Anyway, Bird was definitely passed his prime. He was having serious back issues that summer and that actually limited a lot of his play throughout the games.
I remember being so excited about that original dream team. It's amazing how little interest I have in Team USA these days. I find the other sports way more interesting.

Bird was past his prime yes, but as were many of the other members of the team. Fact is that maybe outside of Jordan and Magic, he was the greatest player of his time and should have had the honor of starting. Christ you could Larry out there at 1/4 strength and they still would have steamrolled anyone with that supporting cast!
