This story bothers me. Yes I know the Duke Lacrosse boys were falsely accused but the stereotype remains for a variety of reasons and I agree with this author that this does nothing to rebuke the entitled rich asshole stereotype that Lacrosse players tend to have on the whole. (yes it's a generalization no need to discuss that there are plenty of great young people that play lacrosse outside of native americans though it's hardly a sport of the commons)
I guess it has less to do with Lacrosse and more to do with young people not having coping skills to deal with loss and also that dominant douchebag issue that many males especially athletes possess. When this first happened... it didn't even seem that shocking to me. Senseless of course. It angered me of course... but abuse is ridiculously common on college campuses and really everywhere for that matter. It has to tear up both the womens and mens lacrosse teams at Va being so close. Ridiculously sad all around. That said, I don't think most of us want to believe our friends, teammates and collegues capable of something like this and we don't want to butt in to other peoples private business. Outside of the thought police and or speaking up if one catches wind of a potential violent act... I'm really not sure what can be done to prevent this other than having more frank discussion among people.
