I can't believe MLS is finally using the proper offenses for yellow cards. Now if we can just get them to put the home team on the left.

Oh and in case no one noticed, Vancouver was awarded the 17th MLS franchise on Wednesday. In about 90 minutes, Portland will be announced as #18. Both will begin play in 2011.

Well it's just MLS going after the USL teams.

Seattle Sounders were USL and now MLS
Vancouver Whitecaps were/are USL and will become MLS 2011
Portland Timbers were/are USL and will become MLS 2011

MLS awards 18th franchise to Portland
Commissioner Garber announces further Pacific Northwest expansion
Major League Soccer Communications

NEW YORK -- Major League Soccer has reached an agreement with The Paulson Family that will bring an MLS team to Portland in 2011, MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced Friday. The announcement of Portland as the League's 18th club comes just two days after Vancouver was announced as the League's 17th team, also beginning play in 2011.

"A city with such a storied soccer tradition deserves an MLS team, and we are proud to have Portland join the top level of professional soccer in our region," Garber said. "Merritt Paulson and his family provide a vibrant and innovative ownership group that truly loves the world's game and we believe PGE Park will provide a world-class soccer environment for soccer fans."

Known for its fervent support of soccer since the heyday of the North American Soccer League's Portland Timbers in the 1970s, Portland completes this round of expansion for MLS, which could expand to 20 teams by 2012 if two additional cities are deemed ready to join. The Portland MLS team will retain the storied Timbers name.

Merritt Paulson is the owner and president of Shortstop, LLC, parent company of the Portland Beavers and Portland Timbers professional sports franchises. Before assuming ownership of the baseball and soccer teams, he was the Senior Director of Marketing and Business Development at NBA Entertainment in New York.

"Today is a historic day for Soccer City, USA, and it is a big win for our economy, our community and for soccer fans everywhere," Paulson said. "We are in a position to make this announcement today because of our incredible fans and strong leadership from city leaders. Not only does this bring Major League Soccer to Portland, but it creates hundreds of jobs, protects taxpayers from risk and shines a positive national and international spotlight on Portland and the state of Oregon."

On March 11, Portland's city council paved the way for today's MLS announcement, voting to approve a proposal to improve PGE Park for MLS and to build a new ballpark for the Portland Beavers Triple-A baseball team at the site of the Memorial Coliseum.

"The Portland City Council's recent approval of the framework for the renovations of PGE Park was a key factor in Portland becoming our 18th team," Commissioner Garber added. "While I understand that there are some additional steps to formally conclude this process, we are confident that the package will be finalized in the next few months."

Upgrades to PGE Park will transform the historic venue into a world-class soccer facility and provide an even more authentic fan experience for the MLS Timbers. The improvement will add several state-of-the-art amenities, including permanent seats and concessions on the east side of the park, widened concourses, improved player facilities and a restaurant with a view of the field.

The Timbers, who first entered the Portland professional sports landscape in the 1970s as a member of the NASL, will field a team in the United Soccer Leagues First Division in 2009 and 2010.

Individuals who purchase 2009 and 2010 Timbers season tickets will have top priority for 2011 MLS season seat selection. Likewise, business and entertainment suite-holders for the 2009 and 2010 Timbers season will have the first opportunity to purchase suites for the 2011 MLS season. Non-Timbers season ticket holders can place a $50 refundable deposit per seat to secure a priority 2011 MLS season seat selection. Call (503) 553-5555 or visit http://www.portlandtimbers.com for details.

Portland is home to the North American headquarters of adidas, official athletic sponsor and licensed product supplier for MLS and all its teams since 2005.

"adidas is synonymous with soccer and bringing the MLS to Portland is a great next step in our goal of inspiring a soccer nation," said Patrik Nilsson, president, adidas North America. "As the sport's global leader, we have seen first-hand the positive effects MLS expansion teams have on their markets. adidas is passionate about soccer. Portland loves soccer. Together as fans of the sport we will build on the traditions and passion that exist around soccer in our hometown."

Portland becomes the third Pacific Northwest city in MLS, and its geographic rivalries with Seattle and Vancouver will be contested on the soccer field in front of spirited, colorful crowds.

By 2011, the League will have added a second team in Los Angeles, expanded its footprint to seven new markets, and returned to San Jose, in a six-year span. Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA joined in 2005, Houston Dynamo began play in 2006, Toronto FC debuted in 2007, and the San Jose Earthquakes returned as an expansion team in 2008. Last night Seattle Sounders FC played their inaugural match, in 2010, Philadelphia begins as the 16th team, and Vancouver and Portland take the field in 2011.

Oh this is fine. I didn't have any intention of doing an overly-detailed thread like the past couple of years. I got tired of updating that shit. Just gonna copy and paste from MLSNet.

well yeah, i technically understand what they're doing, but revenue-wise it doesn't make much sense i guess. i don't have the numbers on me so maybe they're seeing something i'm not (which is probably the case), but having that many mls teams over that small of an area... most teams are just having trouble filling up their stadiums as it is.

Remember that time Chicago won at Dallas for the first time in like 10 years? Because I was there. 8)

PS: So much for MLSNet using the proper caution offenses.

Are they using generic caution offenses?

MLS Weekend Previews
(All times Eastern)

Saturday, March 28
Toronto FC at Columbus Crew, 4:00 p.m. (DK, Match Center)

The Columbus Crew will open its 2009 MLS home schedule this Saturday, March 28, as it hosts Toronto FC for First Kick 2009 at Crew Stadium. The match will also be the first leg of the 2009 Trillium Cup competition and will be the first opportunity for most fans to check out the defending MLS Cup champs in person.

The Trillium Cup, which refers to the official flower of the province of Ontario and official wildflower of the State of Ohio, is awarded annually to the winner of the season series between the geographic rivals. The Crew won the inaugural competition last season, going unbeaten in three games against the Reds (1-0-2).

First Kick 2009 festivities this Saturday at Crew Stadium will involve several features, including a commemorative coin giveaway. The coin, which celebrates the Crew’s 2008 MLS Cup championship, will be distributed to fans upon entry, while supplies last. The Crew will also unveil new championship banners in the stadium’s upper northeast corner and as part of its championship perks this season, the Crew will play with a special silver ball beginning this weekend and continuing throughout the season at Crew Stadium. Finally, a special Trillium Cup ceremony honoring the Crew will take place during halftime of the match.

Saturday’s match, which kicks off at 4 p.m. ET, will be televised live locally on ONN-TV, with Dwight Burgess and Bill McDermott calling all the action. The game can also be heard in English on News/Talk 610 WTVN with Neil Sika and John Bluem behind the microphone and on-line at TheCrew.com and MLSNet.com, as well as in Spanish on La Que Buena 1550-AM, featuring Carlos Cordova and Benny Pietrangelo on the call.

Toronto enters the match after defeating Kansas City, 3-2, in its opening weekend match last Saturday (March 21). Defender Jim Brennan put Toronto in the lead late in the first half and Amado Guevara scored the first of two goals in the 53rd minute to double the Reds’ lead, before K.C.’s Davy Arnaud tallied just two minutes later to halve Toronto’s lead. Guevara followed by notching the eventual game-winner in the 62nd minute. The Wizards’ Arnaud tried to rally the Wizards with a second goal in the 76th minute, but K.C. couldn’t find the match equalizer before the final whistle.

The Black & Gold enters Saturday’s match after drawing with Houston, 1-1, on the road last Saturday, in a match that featured the last three MLS Cup champions. After a first half in which neither side was able to draw first blood, Houston took the lead in the 53rd minute, when Chris Wondolowski sprung Brian Ching with a pass behind the Crew defense, which Ching poked home for his first goal of 2009. The Crew responded in the 82nd minute when rookie midfielder Alex Grendi sent a diagonal pass to second half substitute Jason Garey at the top of the box. Garey nodded the ball down to a wide open Guillermo Barros Schelotto who calmly slotted the ball inside the left post and into the back of the net to bring the Black & Gold even.

Chicago Fire at D.C. United 7:30 p.m., (DK, Match Center)

The Fire provided supporting evidence to numerous predictions that they’re a title contender in 2009 with an emphatic 3-1 victory at FC Dallas. The Chicago Fire have eliminated D.C. from the MLS Cup Playoffs three of the past six years. United is looking to rebound from giving up a pair of late goals by Landon Donovan in L.A. and try to grab three vital points at home at RFK stadium

New England Revolution at New York Red Bulls, 7:30 p.m. (FSC, FSE )

After dropping their season opener last Thursday, the Red Bulls look to earn their first win of the season Saturday when they take on the New England Revolution in their first game at Giants Stadium at 7:30 PM ET (TV: Fox Soccer Channel; Radio: WADO 1280 AM).

Starting their final season at Giants Stadium, the Red Bulls look to finish their time at the Meadowlands with the same strong form they have exhibited over the past two seasons, where they went 9-3-3 at home. They will be hosting a Revolution side that is coming off a 1-0 win on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes last Saturday night. Despite missing several key players including forward Taylor Twellman and midfielder Steve Ralston, New England was able to earn the three points after Kheli Dube scored the game’s lone goal in the 55th minute.

New England is coming off a season in which it went 12-11-7 in League play and qualified for the playoffs for the seventh-straight season before falling to the Chicago Fire in their Eastern Conference Semifinal Series. The Revolution, the 2008 SuperLiga champion, is backstopped by veteran goalkeeper Matt Reis, who earned a 1.38 goals against average and six shutouts last season. Last season, Ralston and Twellman scored eight goals each while midfielder Shalrie Joseph has earned MLS Best XI honors three times.

In 2008, the Red Bulls and Revolution played to a pair of ties in their two encounters. At Giants Stadium on April 19, the Red Bulls earned a 1-1 draw after Jozy Altidore’s first half goal was cancelled out by a second half Jeff Larentowicz strike. The Red Bulls earned a point at Gillette Stadium on June 18 with a 1-1 draw. Red Bulls midfielder Seth Stammler and Ralston were the goalscorers. New York is 16-23-9 all-time against the Revolution and 12-8-5 at home.

The Red Bulls have gone unbeaten in their last five home openers (3-0-2) and is 7-3-2 all-time. Their last loss in a home opener was against the Columbus Crew on April 12, 2003 – a 1-0 defeat. New York has never lost to the Revolution in four home openers, going 3-0-1 with wins coming in 1997, 2001 and 2002. New York drew, 0-0, with New England on April 8, 2006.

Kansas City Wizards at Colorado Rapids, 9:30 p.m. (DK, Match Center)

Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens will be on his toes whenever the Wizards’ Davy Arnaud is near the ball, because the Wizards midfielder smashed two long-range goals last week – one with each foot. The Wizards are looking for their first win in Denver since 2004.

Houston Dynamo at San Jose Earthquakes, 10:30 p.m. (DK, Match Center)

Linked by the 2005 move that launched the Dynamo, these clubs played three tense matches last year with former teammates Brian Ching and Ryan Cochrane scuffling at the end of one of them. The first season series ever between them ended in a 1-1-1 knot.

Real Salt Lake at Seattle Sounders FC, 10:30 p.m. (DK, Match Center)

After a bye in Week 1, RSL heads into noisy Qwest Field in search of points while the Sounders FC aim for an encore performance. Real’s attacking trio of Yura Movsisyan, Javier Morales and Clint Mathis will look to get the season off on the right foot and lead RSL back to the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Sunday, March 29
Chivas USA at FC Dallas, 3:00 p.m. (Telefutura)

Kenny Cooper’s strike from midfield was a rarity; so was Paulo Nagamura’s brace for Chivas USA. Cooper is used to scoring goals; he scored 18 in 2008 to finish second in the Budweiser Golden Boot race. Nagamura is not; before last week’s double, he had scored four goals in 104 career league appearances.

The Red-and-White will look for success on the road as they travel to face FC Dallas this Sunday at 12:00 noon PT in a match that will be broadcast locally on Prime Ticket and nationally on TeleFutura. The match comes after Chivas USA earned a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids on Opening Day this past Saturday at The Home Depot Center, with Paulo Nagamura scoring both goals for the Red-and-White within a four minute span in the second half. The win gave Chivas USA its fourth consecutive win in its Home Opener match, and ties the team with Seattle Sounders FC atop the Western Conference. After the match at Dallas, Chivas USA returns home for a game against the defending MLS Cup Champion Columbus Crew on Sunday, April 5, at 5:00 p.m. at The Home Depot Center. For more information, or tickets to the match, please call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visit cdchivasusa.com.
