Well, of course it's spot on. But what does he propose? We worry about things that matter all the time? Why listen to music? See a concert? Visit a state park? See a ballet? Or do anything? Why read a novel? Why watch the news? People dying in Darfur affects me just as much as the Royals getting swept by the Orioles. Is Chomsky completely free of spare time? Is he constantly working on things that "matter"? Gimme a break. Very very few people want that life? I sure as hell don't. I am not as big a sports fan as I used to be, but I have no regrets watching the Hornets play the Cavs just because it was on TV. I enjoyed it.
I agree that people go a little overboard, but it doesn't mean that sports themselves are bad. No one is forcing you to cheer for your high school football team. But if you do, you get a little school pride, god forbid you have a little fun, and you may look back fondly on your high school years. That is so bad. I hate that I was that way. This is just a nerd trying to get a little back.

I think he is talking more about the fact that billions of dollars and man hours are tied up in what is essentially an arbitrary game. He speaks a lot about the media and how people are distracted from the real issues by diversions like pro football. Bread and circuses and all that. Yeah he mentions HS football but I think he is much more concerned with the macro then the micro.

Uh, well, the things in bold are actually, you know, art, and are considering to be enlightening even in their lowest form. I think Chomsky's proposing that we spend less of our time worrying about sports and more focusing on how to solve democracy, world hunger, etc. etc. etc.
But this quote, man
Quote:
People dying in Darfur affects me just as much as the Royals getting swept by the Orioles.
You're a stand-up guy.
