NASCAR Makes Rule Changes For 2010 Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Race fans have been delivering a strong message, and now in response, NASCAR has delivered a new rules package that will heighten the racing excitement for the prestigious 52nd annual Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 14 at Daytona International Speedway.

The changes, which were announced on Thursday afternoon, include:
• Permitting bump drafting around the entire 2.5-mile tri-oval shaped track
• A larger restrictor plate that will provide the drivers with more horsepower

“We applaud NASCAR for listening to the race fans,” Daytona International Speedway President Robin Braig said. “The racing at Daytona has been exceptional year in and year out and these changes will give the drivers even more flexibility on the race track to provide the thrilling action that race fans come to expect at the Daytona 500.”

The new rules will be in effect for all of the Hershey’s Milk & Milkshakes Speedweeks 2010 events.

Fans will witness the new rules in action for the first time in the Budweiser Shootout, the 75-lap, non-points event that is part of racing tripleheader on Saturday, Feb. 6 with Daytona 500 Qualifying By Kroger and the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200.

The new rules will also be in effect for the Gatorade Duel At Daytona, the no-holds barred 150-mile qualifying races which finalize the 43-car field for “The Great American Race.”

Tickets for all of Hershey’s Milk & Milkshakes Speedweeks events, including the Daytona 500, are available on your web-enabled phone at mobile.daytonainternationalspeedway.com, online at http://www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP.

Fans can stay connected with Daytona International Speedway on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/disupdates) and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/DaytonaInternationalSpeedway).

The Budweiser Shootout field now includes a collection of the sport's top drivers and top performers at Daytona. Below is the new criteria, with eligibility dependent on drivers having competed in the Cup Series during the past two seasons:

• The 12 drivers that qualified for the 2009 Chase
• Past Cup Series champions
• Past Budweiser Shootout champions
• Past Daytona points race winners
• The reigning rookie of the year

The Budweiser Shootout will be run in two segments, the first at 25 laps and the second a 50-lap sprint for the win. That's 187.5 miles on the track's high-banked, 2.5-mile layout.

Following the first segment, a 10-minute "pit stop" gives crews the opportunity to make normal adjustments to their cars. That means tweaks they would do on a normal pit stop during a regular Cup Series event.

• All work must be done on pit road or in the garage.
• Teams may not change springs, shocks or rear-ends.
• All green- and yellow-flag laps in both segments will count.

Following the 10-minute "pit stop", the event's second segment remains a 50-lap sprint for the win.

Daytona 500 qualifying will begin at 1:05 p.m. ET Saturday before the Budweiser Shootout.

Was there any major off season driver moves? I know Kasey Kahne is driving a Ford now, but is that it?

Jamie McMurray was the driver that got ousted from the Roush Stable, and now he drives the #1 for Theresa Earnhardt.

Junior always runs well at Daytona, but I hope this is a sign of whats to come. He really needs to make the chase this year. I'm also digging his new beard.

Winning Pole and Front Line at Daytona really doesn't matter though, since we still have the Duels on Thursday to finish the Qualifying.

Plus Daytona is all about Drafting and Bumping.

Danica Patrick looked really good tonight in the ARCA race. She really handled her car well, stayed out of trouble and finished 7th.

I do not endorse this thread and will not post again till the thread title changes.

Suggestions?

As long as there is no endorsement for JJ, I'm in!

I know I haven't been very active at RM or these threads particullarly, and I'm not making any promises for this year, but thanks for all your efforts Rick. I appreciated the NASCAR love here and even though I don't post much I've read them all over the years.

cheers
