As a Sox fan, you'd think that I would hate George Steinbrenner. I don't. He was a great owner; a man who did what it took to lead the Yanks to 7 World Series titles.
He's the kind of guy you want running your team. I know that he made some people mad, broke the law in the 70s, but he bought the Yanks from CBS and turned them into the best franchise in professional sports.
He won 7 titles; that's the same amount of titles the Sox have won in their entire existence.

One of my FB friends said it best, I think. He was an "insufferable meddling bastard". An egotist of the absolute highest order, it was only when his "desire to win" finally superseded his desire to make every decision personally that he really started to gain success.
The Yankees had two eras of success in the Steinbrenner ownership. The first, in the late 70's was 100% a product of George being willing to outspend the competition and buy the best free agents in the fledgling days of baseball free agency. In the 80's, as other owners began to figure out how to play the free agent game, and simply outspending the economically depressed competition didn't work anymore, the Yankees failed to make the playoffs for 13 straight years (despite having the best combined record of any team in the 1980's). By the early 90's, the Yankees were marginally competitive in their best years and a joke in their worst (95 losses in 1990). George was in trouble with the law and the commissioner's office for interfering with Dave Winfield's contract, as well as other less noteworthy transgressions. George Steinbrenner was the single most hated man in New York.
It was only when George hired Bob Watson as GM, and later and more critically Brian Cashman, and allowed them to do their jobs that the Yankees became the latter-day dynasty that they are today. For the last 10-15 years of his life, George did what owners are supposed to do for their teams: SIGN THE CHECKS.
Rest in Peace, George. Thanks for the money and the dedication to spend it on winning. That's all the fans care about.
