since we're gearing up i started a new thread, with a new team, a new captain, and a new year .

this is the latest on the NYR real Hometown Boy, Paul Mara- solidifying our defensive corp after signing redden and rozsival .

And Paul Mara has re-signed with the Rangers at about two-thirds of his prior salary ($1.5 million), telling Rangers Report that he did what the Rangers needed Jagr and Avery to do -- give the Rangers a hometown discount because this is where he really really wanted to play (see Blue Notes for more). See Slap Shot for more on the Rangers' latest acquisitions (about halfway down through the posting) and Prospect Park on fan reaction.

Paul Mara said he had opportunities from other teams to make more money. But the reason the defenseman accepted a one year deal for $1.95 million—which is roughly two thirds of what he made last season—is that there was no other place he wanted to be.

“There was interest from other teams but I wanted to win in New York. So there was stuff left on the table, but it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t win,” Mara said by phone just now. “After all the signings and trades, people are excited and ready for it. Everything we have brought in is the pieces of the puzzle to win a Stanley Cup.”

Now Mara is part of that puzzle, which I’ll admit comes as a bit of a surprise. The defenseman never seemed to be one of Tom Renney’s favorites—- based not only on some healthy scratches at points last season, but also Renney’s reluctance to use him on the power play. Mara spoke glowingly of Wade Redden just now, and he probably knows his chances of playing the man-advantage have diminished even more with Redden’s arrival. But he still didn’t want to pass up a chance to win next season.

“I always wanted to stay in New York,” Mara said. “The coaches are great, the players, the trainers. First and foremost I told my agent this is where I wanted to be.”

Mara returns
The biggest Red Sox fan on the Rangers is back.

Not unexpectedly, D Paul Mara inked a $1.95 million, 1-year deal that Sather put in front of him yesterday. On breakup day, Mara---an unrestricted free agent--- said he told the front office and coaches that he wanted to come back.

Did he like the moves that the Rangers made? "Absolutely," he told me earlier during a phone call. "Redden and Rozy are great. They're adding great pieces to the puzzle."

So the top 6 defenseman, as it stands now: Redden, Rozsival, Staal, Girardi, Kalinin, Mara.

Not too shabby, as the Scooter used to say.

Tom Renney revved for Rangers, even with loss of veterans
BY JOHN DELLAPINA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Sunday, July 6th 2008, 1:37 AM

Keivom/News

Despite losing players like Brendan Shanahan, Rangers coach Tom Renney is pleased with his team.

A year ago at this time, the most cautionary voice was Jaromir Jagr's. Amid the euphoria in Rangerland surrounding the signings of Scott Gomez and Chris Drury, the now-former Rangers captain warned that on-ice chemistry might prove elusive.

To be fair, Tom Renney wasn't planning any parades, either. And the Rangers' coach - still stinging from a second straight second-round playoff ouster two months after the fact - doesn't view this past week's roster overhaul as an end as much as a new beginning.

"It's an exciting time and I'm good with it," Renney told the Daily News. "Obviously, I'm disappointed about certain people. But I can't dwell on that.

"As a coach, you've got to consider both sides of the street. And when you give your input, you have to be fair. Certainly, it's an exciting time for the Rangers."

Don't get Renney wrong. As one of the most influential voices in the room when GM Glen Sather convened the organization's brain trust for its planning meetings in late May, Renney was among those pushing for the club to get faster and younger.

Still, how could a coach not experience a moment's pause at having traded the reliable productivity of league luminaries such as Jagr, Brendan Shanahan and Martin Straka - not to mention Sean Avery's special talents - for the hope that Nikolai Zherdev will get it and Markus Naslund will remember it?

No, the Rangers haven't issued any definitive declarations about Shanahan. But their cap situation makes that virtually unnecessary.

Counting just returning veterans and recent free-agents signed, the Rangers have approximately $52.9 million committed for 2008-09 (the upper limit is set at $56.7 million). And that's for just 12 forwards, six defensemen and two goaltenders.

Throw in about $500,000 from bonuses exceeding last year's cap. And add in pending contracts to qualified restricted free agents Fredrik Sjostrom (minimum $852,000) and Nigel Dawes (at least $500,000) and the Rangers are up to $54.75 million. And that doesn't count forward Lauri Korpikoski, who will be due $1.017 million if he's on the roster, or whatever a seventh defenseman will cost.

Bottom line: There is no money to sign Shanahan. Which means Renney will preside over a team with a new captain and two new alternate captains. This truly does become Gomez's and Drury's team.

On defense, the Rangers are clearly and significantly improved. But at what price?

Nobody could argue that Wade Redden and Dmitri Kalinin aren't an upgrade over Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman. However, in signing Redden and Kalinin to deals that will pay them a combined $8.6 million for cap purposes this season and by re-signing Michal Rozsival for $2.9 million more than the $2.1 million he made last season, the Rangers were left with limited options up front.

Signing Naslund for two years at $4 million per looks like a bargain in a market that saw the top free agents command offers of $7 million to $9 million per season. But then, Naslund hasn't been a true top forward in the NHL for several seasons - ever since he considered signing with the Rangers coming out of the lockout, as a matter of fact.

Renney, who briefly coached Naslund in Vancouver, believes a change of scenery could spark a return to form by the lefty-shooting winger, who turns 35 on July 30. So does Naslund.

"My thinking is that I want to play on a level that I know I can play," he said. "I know I can play better hockey than I have the last couple of years. And I think this is a chance to prove that."

I tell you, this whole PJ site must consist of every hockey fan. Which is cool. But its amazing to compare the fans on here and then see how awful the ratings are for NHL.

Slats:

Quote:
" "In general I'm happy, though not everything turned out the way we wanted," Sather said of the Rangers' moves in the free agent market. "But obviously it was meant to be. We're still working, and we'll try to improve our team even more."

he has already put Jagr behind him. "For me, it no longer has significance," he said of the way things turned out with Jagr. "Jaromir has made his choice. He probably thought it would be better. I don't know what terms he was offered in Russia, but they were probably pretty good for him to go as far away as Omsk. It's in fact somewhat similar to Edmonton -- I know Kevin Lowe also offered Jagr decent money. For me the subject of Jagr is closed. We've turned the page and have started building a new team. For us, that's all that matters. We have a good goaltender in the person of Henrik Lundqvist, good defensemen -- now we have to strengthen our attack, and we'll be able to say we're ready for the season."

Mats Sundin remains on Sather's radar screen as a way of further improving the attack. "We talked a lot with Mats's agent and with him, but he needs time to make his decision," Sather said. "We're prepared to wait, even if he ultimately turns us down. All the same, we're grateful he's considered our offer." Marian Hossa was another free agent Sather talked to. "He said that he would think about it," Sather said of Hossa considering a move to New York. "[But he] accepted the Detroit offer. To him it was more tempting, since Detroit won the Stanley Cup last season and has a good chance of repeating this season, though it'll be very difficult."

Sather was also asked about the feud between his friend Brian Burke, the Ducks' GM whom he tried to lure to New York as GM or Assistant GM when Burke was ousted in Vancouver, and Lowe, the Edmonton GM who played for him there and was of course a member of the Rangers' 1994 Cup winning team. Sather was diplomatic, noting that Lowe was trying to do what he could for his team under the terms of the CBA and that Burke was upset over actions that affected his team. Sather was likewise non-committal when asked about the growing rivalry between the NHL and KHL, which heated up even further yesterday when Alexander Radulov signed on with a team back in his native country despite still being under contract in the NHL in Nashville.

Hollweg traded:

Cliff Fletcher, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Monday that the team has obtained left-winger Ryan Hollweg from the New York Rangers. In exchange, the Rangers will receive Pittsburgh’s fifth-round pick in 2009 which was previously acquired by Toronto in the Hal Gill trade on February 26, 2008.

Hollweg, 25, scored two goals and added two assists to go along with 96 penalty minutes (third on the team) in 70 games for the Rangers in 2007-08. He dressed for eight of New York’s 10 playoff games in 2008. Hollweg was an integral member of the 2003-04 Medicine Hat Tigers as they captured the Western Hockey League Championship and advanced to the Memorial Cup.

The native of Downey, California was originally the Rangers’ eighth round choice, 238th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

so is my lack of excitement over this trade warranted?

what's wrong with you? If 2 goals and 2 assists in 70 games doesn't get you excited, nothing will.

as my friend St put it ;
Not a replacement for Darci Tucker -- DT was a hockey player, he could score, pass, hit, defend, AND fight. Hollweg can only skate.

The Rangers' signings of free agents Aaron Voros, Patrick Rissmiller, and Andreas Jantim, players with similar qualities who play similar roles, forced Hollweg out that door once and for all

Shanny only wants the Rangers

Blueshirt Bulletin
July 15, 2008
Fritsche Re-Signs, Shanahan Still Seeking Ranger Contract
The Rangers have avoided going to arbitration with newly acquired forward Dan Fritsche, signing the 23-year-old Ohio native to a contract that Blue Notes believes is worth $875,000, a raise from the $750,000 he earned last season and the $825,000 qualifying offer he received from the Blue Jackets before they traded him to New York (see NYR.com for more). In other news, Brendan Shanahan's agent said the only team his client is talking to is the Rangers in denying a report that Vancouver offered him $2 million. And Howlings reports that the Wolf Pack have re-signed forward Mike Ouellette.

To read more about the recently traded Ryan Hollweg, see the Journal News, Newsday, Post, NY Sports Day, and Prospect Park. Those zany Islanders are at it again, firing coach Ted Nolan, the only reason the Isles had a sniff at the playoffs in each of his two seasons at the Mausoleum. Apparently, the overachieving coach was no match for puppethead GM Garth Snow, the former backup goalie who was chosen to replace a real GM, former Ranger manager Neil Smith, when Smith lost a power struggle. In both cases, underachieving egotistical goalie Rick DiPietro is believed to have been in the middle of it all -- see the Post and Newsday for more.

At Blueshirt Bullletin+ we have an interview with Ranger prospect Max Campbell courtesy of Jess Rubenstein. Blueshirt Bulletin subscribers who have not yet learned how to access BB+ should send an E-mail to .com for more information. If you don't have a subscription yet, click here to see a form that has all the information you need to get Blueshirt Bulletin as well as access to BB+.

New contract to keep Dawes in New York

New York Rangers Jul 16, 2008, 11:43 AM EDT New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with restricted free agent forward Nigel Dawes.

Nigel Dawes has much to smile about after signing a contract that ensures he'll continue playing home games at MSG.

Dawes, 23, skated in 61 games with the Rangers this past season, registering 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points, along with 10 penalty minutes and a plus-11 rating. He led the club in plus/minus rating (plus-11), ranked second in shootout game-deciding goals (two) and tied for third in game-winning goals (four). His four game-winning goals also tied for second in the NHL among all rookie skaters.

Dawes registered five multiple-point games, including a multiple-goal game on October 25 against New Jersey at Madison Square Garden. During the 2008 playoffs, Dawes recorded two goals and two assists for four points, while appearing in all 10 of the Rangers’ post-season contests. In addition, Dawes skated in 20 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL), notching 14 goals and 20 assists for 34 points and a plus-eight rating. At the time of his recall on January 7, he ranked second on the Wolf Pack in goals (14), assists (20) and points (34). He also led all AHL skaters in points per game (1.70 points/game) and was tied for 16th in the league in points (34) at the time.

The 5-9, 190-pounder has skated in 69 career NHL games in two seasons with the Rangers, registering 15 goals and 15 assists for 30 points, along with 10 penalty minutes. In 2006-07, Dawes appeared in eight games with the Rangers, collecting one goal. He made his NHL debut on October 5, 2006 vs. Washington and notched his first career NHL goal on October 21, 2006 at Toronto.

Prior to the season, Dawes was named the winner of the 2006 Lars-Erik Sjoberg Award as the best rookie of the Rangers Training Camp, along with Brandon Dubinsky, as voted by select New York media. In addition, Dawes has appeared in 166 career AHL games with Hartford, registering 76 goals and 85 assists for 161 points, along with 52 penalty minutes.

The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native was originally selected as the Rangers’ fifth round draft choice, 149th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

2008-2009 schedule:
http://rangers.nhl.com/team/app?service=page&page=TeamSchedule

The New York Rangers will open the 2008-09 season on Saturday, Oct. 4, taking on the Tampa Bay Lightning at O2 Arena in Prague, Czech Republic. This marks the first time the Rangers will play a regular season game outside of North America, and the second consecutive year that the NHL has begun its season overseas. New York’s home opener at MSG will be on Friday, October 10, against the Chicago Blackhawks.

With a newly formatted schedule, the Rangers will face each NHL team at least one time over the course of the season. New York will face Atlantic Division foes New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and the Islanders six times each. The Blueshirts will face all other Eastern Conference opponents a total of four times apiece.

Also, the Rangers will host the Northwest Division – Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Minnesota, and Vancouver – and will travel to meet the Central Division opponents – Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Nashville, and St. Louis. New York will also host Chicago as one of their at-large games on October 10. In addition, the Rangers will host Pacific Division opponents – Anaheim, Dallas and Phoenix – and will travel to meet – Anaheim, Dallas, Los Angeles, and San Jose.

The schedule features six Saturday contests at MSG and seven Sunday games at home. The Rangers will play one back-to-back set in New York, on Saturday, March 21 vs. Buffalo and Sunday, March 22 vs. Ottawa. The team’s longest homestand will be three games, which happens four times – October 13 to October 17, November 15 to November 19, December 23 to December 29, and March 21 to March 24 – and the busiest night on the Rangers’ home schedule is Monday, with eight dates. In addition, the Rangers will play seven home games on Sundays, seven on Tuesdays, six on Wednesdays, four on Thursdays, two on Fridays, and six on Saturdays during the season.

Starting times for all games at MSG will be 7 p.m., except for the following seven dates (which includes potential national selections for NBC*): Wed., Nov. 19 vs. Vancouver (7:30 PM); Sun., Nov. 30 vs. Florida (1:00 PM); Sat., Dec. 27 vs. New Jersey (7:30 PM); Wed., Jan. 7 vs. Montreal (7:30 PM); Sun., Feb. 15 vs. Philadelphia (TBD*); Sun., Mar. 8 vs. Boston (TBD*); and Sun., Mar. 15 vs. Philadelphia (TBD*).
*Please note games listed as TBD are based on a potential national TV schedule. Start times on these games will not be confirmed until 13 days prior to the game day. Please check newyorkrangers.com for final start times.

NOTE: Single-game tickets will be put on-sale to the public in September. No date has been set at this time.
