Josh McDaniels just announced five players would not play Sunday against the New York Jets because of injuries _ safety Brian Dawkins (knee), outside linebacker Robert Ayers (undisclosed), cornerback Andre’ Goodman (thigh), special teams captain Wesley Woodyard (hamstring) and safety Darcel McBath (ankle).

And they want an 18-game season? WTF are they thinking?
They want to expand interest into two more of the preseason games that no one cares about except players trying to make the league.
The problem has been for a long time, that the league charges people full price for nonsensical scrimmage football. People complain about that to the league.
The league is using justifiable comments of "fleecing" to say...oh the fans really are saying they want two more regular season games....
No douchebags. Fans don't want to be charged full price for 5 minutes of starters... That's what people complain about.
16 games is a gracious plenty... what they need to do is eliminate the preseason games from the season ticket packages and everyone would be freaking golden.
The NFL needs to treat that like baseball treats preseason action.... not the same ticket prices for not the same quality.
They are reticent to give up any ounce of revenue even though if they cut prices dramatically for preseason football they would probably pack the buildings full of people who would actually want to be there (instead of empty season ticketholder seats) and do really well in concessions and merchandise sales.

I split this off from the Broncos thread because I thought it warranted it's own thread.
Anyway, I advocate 17, on the following grounds: --The extra game could be set up for annual interconference rivalry games. It'd be awesome to see matchups like Jets/Giants and Cowboys/Texans every year. --They could export the extra game on a neutral field, either overseas, or in nearby geographic locations (Steelers/Eagles in State College, Lions/Browns in Ann Arbor/Columbus, for a few examples). Most importantly, they could also satisfy the market in Los Angeles by having a few games there without needing a whole team there. --Every team has to have a winning or losing record--no more finishing right at .500. --Starters play most of the third preseason game anyway--by just cutting down one game, that's the one that will probably go away in practice.

If they want to increase the amount of games at all then they need to increase the amount of players each team has as well.
Ultimately, I think this would be the trade off the owners give to get the 2 extra games, probably including the ability to dress 2-4 more players as well.. and i bet that would reduce injuries to starters/primary backups... because i bet those 2-4 guys would be purely special teams players, where a lot of the injuries occur.

I think it's only fair because you have the ability to lock up more guys who fit may actually fit your system instead of just whoever is on the street. Although sometimes they're one and the same (like all those ZBZ RBs the Broncos had to call up during the 08 season when they had all those inuries.) Although I guess that's also what the practice squad is for.

I think this is so risky, and not really worth the extra game or two. At the end of the day, you're just increasing the risk of injury. Every weekend there are injuries that take players out for 4-8 weeks or more. Adding players to the roster would certainly help this - but it's also going to lead to a lower quality game, imo.
