I can see why everyone is putting the Phillies and the Red Sox in the WS since they made the sexy offseason moves, but really, when you look at this much closer there's too many variables to call this a slam dunk:

I call your attention to the Peter Gammons piece on NESN where he identified the top five best rotations over the last 100 years, and none of those teams won the world series....so a rock star rotation does not equal WS win, Philly.

And for Boston...the case is much worse. It finished second in offense last year and upgraded that a bit. Well, big deal. What did you do to upgrade your pitching?

I like what you did with the bullpen, but that's a crapshoot. And for the starting pitching...you felt no upgrade was needed and you are betting the house that Lackey and Beckett bounce back. At the same time, you know that Clay B. is going to come back to Earth a bit, as will Lester.

I am not sold on Boston in the least. I think the best thing in Bostons offseason was that the yankees did nothing but get older.

I agree; also, it helped that the Rays didn't get any better.

w/ the deals they handed both of them last year they really had no choice but to hope for the rebound.

i think the optimism comes from how the sox look on paper.

the sox on paper (in arguably a weaker division considering pettitte's not coming back and TB lost many stars):

1) a seemingly stronger offense (which was #2 last year anyway)
2) a seemingly just as strong, if not better, defense (better health could go a long way)
3) an improved bullpen (plz remember i've said on paper)
4) four guys that would be #1 for just about any other team (and a wild card in matsuzaka)
