I think we're close enough to start up this one.

Sounds like Jonathan Baldwin is already proving himself to be a major turd even before Week 1. Good job, Kansas City.

http://nfl.si.com/2011/08/19/jonathan-b ... mas-jones/

Jonathan Baldwin’s character issues return in reported fight with Thomas Jones

While Jonathan Baldwin entered the 2011 NFL Draft as one of the top wide receivers on the board, he also carried with him the dreaded “character issues” tag. That didn’t scare away the Chiefs, who selected the wide receiver out of Pittsburgh No. 26 overall.

Kansas City coach Todd Haley immediately tried to soothe any concerns about the pick:

Quote:
We spoke to Jonathan at length at the combine, a number of us. He was one of our formal interviews and we had him in here as one of our 30 visits that were allowed and we feel like we have done our due-diligence and I am very comfortable making him a Kansas City Chief.

You have to wonder if Haley still feels that way. A report out of Chiefs camp Friday stated that Baldwin got into a “locker room scuffle” with veteran running back Thomas Jones, which resulted in an injured wrist for Baldwin that could cost him the entire preseason.

Part of that report cited someone who described Baldwin as a “Diva, spoiled, doesn’t wanna listen.” In other words, exactly what those red flags — which included charges of indecent assault, harassment and disorderly conduct that were later dropped — warned everyone about prior to the draft.

We don’t know all the details of what supposedly went on in the Chiefs’ locker room, so it’s not fair to throw Baldwin under the bus completely. But Jones is one of the more well-respected players in the league, a 12-year veteran — so, suffice it to say, throwing down with him probably won’t earn Baldwin a lot of brownie points with his Chiefs teammates or coaches. Skirmishes occasionally break out on the field at training camps as the heat and competition shortens fuses, but they quickly die down. This incident sounds a little more serious than that.

Already prior to this, Baldwin had been struggling in camp and dealing with a hamstring injury. He made one catch for 14 yards in the Chiefs’ preseason-opening loss to Tampa Bay.

Taking aside any in-house issues that Kansas City could have after this, losing Baldwin until the regular season is a blow for the Chiefs’ offense. Baldwin was drafted with the hope that he could start opposite Dwayne Bowe in K.C.’s offense.

Now, there’s almost no shot of that happening at the start of the regular season.

Baldwin had been working hard prior to camp in an effort to prove his worth, even moving in with Matt Cassel after the draft to get extra work with his new QB. If the report about Friday’s incident is true, though, it could set Baldwin back in a number of ways.

Yeah, I pulled a somewhat old article.

Thumbs can heal, but egos are harder to deal with.

the weird thing about baldwin is that his parents were very strict with him while he was in highschool. he never partied big time or got into any type of trouble like that. im thinking once he was away from that kind of strictness he went a little crazy

From ESPN.com:

"EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora underwent arthroscopic surgery on his troublesome right knee Friday morning, according to the team.

"It's a simple debridement," said Ronnie Barnes, the team's vice president of medical services.

Barnes said Umenyiora's recovery time is expected to be approximately three to four weeks, but a person close to Umenyiora told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that "it could be four to six weeks or longer."

Giants coach Tom Coughlin did not rule Umenyiora out for the season opener Sept. 11 against Washington. He said it was "no surprise" that Umenyiora needed surgery.

"Hopefully, it'll take less time than the other range and we'll get him back as fast as we can," Coughlin said.

Here's all your news from Giants camp:

The defensive end just began practicing with the team Monday after he had his knee cleared by team doctors and a specialist in Atlanta last week.

The hope was Umenyiora could manage the injury and perhaps practice every other day, if needed. But Umenyiora experienced swelling in his knee after practicing for three days. On the team's day off Thursday, Umenyiora opted to have surgery.

"It was better to do it now as opposed to midseason," the defensive end said through the team. "It was going to have to be done, the only question was when. If I'm going to miss a little while, I would prefer it be now than at the crucial part of our season. It's the best decision for the team and myself."

Coughlin didn't think anything happened on the field to make the knee worse.

"I don't think anything happened. ... It swelled up. He didn't want to continue like this: practice, swell up, practice, swell up," he said. "So between the doctors and Osi, the decision was made that they would perform this scope and hopefully eliminate that part of it. Allow the recovery time and then allow him to go back to the field without having this as an issue."

Coughlin said that the team has known that surgery might be an option, so "there's no surprise."

The procedure was performed by team physician Dr. Russell Warren at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

"Osi called me at the end of the day yesterday to let me know that he wanted to have the surgery now," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said Friday. "After practicing for three days he had some swelling in the knee, and it was clear that we were going to have to adjust his practice routine to every other day to maintain his knee.

"Osi's feeling is he wants to get it cleaned up now because he is looking forward to playing this season, and he wants to do it without the knee being an issue for him. He told me how much he really enjoyed being back on the field this week, and he's looking forward to getting back out there once he recovers from the procedure."

Umenyiora, 29, missed the first two weeks of practice with a sore knee while also clashing with management over a new contract. The defensive end wanted a raise from the final two years of his deal worth a total of $7.1 million in base salary, or to be traded to a team that would pay him.

The Giants briefly allowed Umenyiora, who had 11½ sacks and forced 10 fumbles last season, to seek a trade through his agent. But after a couple of days, they rescinded permission to work out a deal when no team was willing to offer a first-round pick in return for the pass-rusher.

The Giants offered Umenyiora performance incentives to be added to his contract but the defensive end rejected it. A player can renegotiate his contract only once per season.

Coughlin said Mathias Kiwanuka, who has moved from defensive end to linebacker, will remain at his starting linebacker position. Justin Tuck, who had missed Wednesday's practice with a sore Achilles, is expected to return to practice Friday.

Jason Pierre-Paul, who will start at right defensive end while Umenyiora is out, also is expected to practice Friday after missing a couple of practices this week with back tightness.

Pierre-Paul had two sacks in one quarter in the preseason opener Saturday against Carolina in place of Umenyiora."

I love Osi, but he's driving me crazy this month. Although I think they might be able to survive the first couple of weeks without him. Hopefully, he's back and ready to go for week 3 for the Eagles.

After seeing Prater blast a kick into the 11th row or so, I'm going to make a "bold" prediction and declare that the kickoff line is going to go back to the 35 in 2012--if not earlier.

1) this kick-off rule is going to reduce scoring league-wide.
2) getting rid of the kick-off and extra-points (its even more of a useless exercise) would completely eliminate kickers.

two cents, peace.

I honestly do not think the kick off rule is going to impact scoring one bit.

But the NFL is going to need to reorganize its commercials, because Im going to just do something else for 5 minutes knowing it will be

Touchdown
Extra Point
Commercial
Touchback
Commercial.
Play.

that middile section from Between Touchdown and Play are not going to be worth watching.

well its already been that way, so we can hope that it will change now that the touchback will be expected.

however, i'm not so optimistic that it will change and that's why i think getting rid of both plays would be nice for viewers at home and especially people at the game. not to mention more scoring plays will be reviewed this year.

Touchdown (7 points on the board)
commercial break
Play (from 20 yardline)

Oh, i know its that way now, but kickoff returns can be the most exciting play in football, so you stick around to watch it, just in case. Now, its going to be even less likely, because even non-touchbacks are going to hang higher in the air and make coverage easier.

One of my favorite things about football announcers is how they pretend that a touchdown is worth 6. For all practical purposes, its worth 7, especially in the first 3.5 quarters.

the name "football" is going to be so useless when kickers are no longer on rosters.

Wait, GH, I thought they dropped Larry Johnson.

Perhaps they should look elsewhere than the state of Pennsylvania for players?
