Yeah, that article is just fan speculation. No local reporters (to my knowledge) has indicated the Wings had any serious interest in Carle, or attempted to offer him a contract. Suter is the one that stings. Parise I don't think is ultimately going to be worth the money he signed for. And much like thodoks with the leafs, I am happy that they have haven't just been throwing around retarded contracts just so they can say they did something. Tootoo, Samuelsson, Gustovsson are all upgrades to team depth. They seem really high on the Swiss forward they signed, given their track record of finding euro talent, Ill assume he'll help too. Obviously the loss of Lidstrom and Stuart are the biggest concerns. Hopefully Brendan Smith can move into a prominent role and make up some for the loss on D.
I don't think they'll be in the Cup conversation, but I imagine they'll still probably make the playoffs. And if there is one organization I have some faith in to make the right calls, it's the Wings.

No, I think you're right to be happy about the lack of large contracts, and Minnesota is really gambling on the present there with some big money (though I think it's the right move for them). But I don't think you can honestly sit there and tell me Detroit had no interest in Carle.

I'm not. Im just saying that I wouldn't go as far as to say whiffed at this point, because I don't know that they had gone after him.

Fair enough. It might be better to say they've been unsuccessful in addressing their defensive needs.

This is what I thought as soon as we started talking about the Wings' "whiffs".
Looks like the Leafs are going to start with JVR at centre. He hasn't played there since college, but I guess they might as well give it a shot and see how it goes. If it works out, I'm assuming either Bozak or Grabovski is on the block.

Matt Carle isn't even close to being in the same class as Suter. Suter is a top 5 defenseman. I don't understand how Matt Carle gets 5.5M when his best offensive season was in 2006. He's worth 4.5M, max.

I would take Suter at his cap hit over Carle at his any day. However, Tampa Bay will be absorbing the $5.5 million cap hit through Carle's age 28-33 seasons, then he comes off the books. Minnesota will pay Suter $7.5 for each of his 28-33 seasons, then they'll keep on dishing it out until he's 40. That hurts.
I don't like crazy contracts like Suter and Parise got, but if Minnesota wins a Cup while they're there then having two albatross contracts for the last few years will be well worth it.

I can buy Suter as a top 5 defenseman right now, but I want to see what he does when Weber isn't on the other side of the ice (I admit I unfairly don't have the same concerns about Weber without Suter)

because Calgary set the market with Dennis Wideman (now THAT is a bad contract)
and I don't think I ever said Matt Carle was in the same class as Suter...I said I'd rather deal with his contract than with Suter's...probably because I'm a Vancouver fan and I've seen what these lifetime deals can turn into (see: The Headcase Who Shall Not Be Named)....two entirely different things
