I have never understood why they wear the same uniform the players do. Does this happen in any other sport?

it's so they can be traded.

THIS.

well not really, It goes back to the time when a lot of them were player/managers. Also, they are the only coach who enters the field of play.

I actually like that they wear the uniforms, makes it look like they should be there.

but yeah, they do make a difference, between making out the lineup, and judging if a player really is ready to play on any given day or should get a day off. Not everyone is Cal Ripken and able to play 162. Definetly a bigger factor in the NL with double switches / pitchers hitting.

Funny, TBS is talking about it right now LOL

anyone notice the complete lack of passion from managers at post game press conferences? it's almost like they're reporters recapping what happened in a really understated manner.

it's like, where phil jackson is "zen master" in basketball, that's just the expectation for managers

from Bill Simmons mail bag the other week http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/849 ... believe-in

Quote:
Q: As I was watching the A's/Tigers playoff game, I realized baseball is the only sport where the coaches/managers wear their team uniforms. How much funnier would all the other sports be if the coaches had to wear the uniforms? If you could choose 2 coaches each from the NFL and NBA that had to wear their team uniforms, who would you pick? My NFL picks would be Andy Reid and Tom Coughlin and NBA would be Erik Spoelstra and Greg Popovich. I would pay an extra five bucks for tickets if they would get coaches to do this.
—Chad Tanner, Gilbert, AZ

SG: An extra five bucks? What about an extra $50??? After spending way too much time thinking about this, I'm picking Popovich (a no-brainer, just because he'd be so angry about it), Mike Woodson (the thought of him cramming into a Knicks uniform cracks me up), Mike Shanahan (for the same reasons as Popovich) and Andy Reid (who should probably start doing this, anyway).
