besides being a lightning rod for criticism, is this job really that difficult? baseball players are dumb, but it's not like a roster's made up of 25 children - these guys generally know what to do regarding their trade. compared to other sports, there's not a ton of scheming to do, especially while under intense time constraints. i dunno, i guess you need someone calling the shots for a team, but he sure doesn't need to be some mastermind.

They always say that you never know how valuable a good manager is until you don't have one.

of course they matter, they make several crucial decisions on a daily basis. i'm just saying is managing a baseball club that much harder than producing a radio show?

Not sure, I've never managed a major league baseball team.

No, because I'd be useless to them outside of game decisions.

And I'd probably make pretty poor game decisions too.

I saw Francona got let go by the Sox. Hope the Cubs go after someone like him as he was just made the scapegoat there. After a year with Mike Quade I can say yes, managers obviously matter. Also, Madden has made several ridiculous in game decisions over the last few weeks that essentially got his team in the playoffs. The comeback against the Yankees was a great example of how important a good skipper is.

I think Joe Girardi's in game decisions had a lot more to do with that comeback than Joe Maddon's.

They matter a little more in the National League with double switching around pitchers and more sacrifice bunts etc. I think more than anything baseball managers need to manage all the huge egos that baseball players seem to have. Some obviously do it a lot better than others.

This is what I've been thinking, as well.

manage them by staying out of their way and doing their best not to set them off, maybe. that sounds simple enough.

I have never understood why they wear the same uniform the players do. Does this happen in any other sport?
