some people have been riding his nuts and derailing my college basketball thread
so here is your own little area to talk about larry legend...
just kidding, i actually wanted to pose this question... would larry bird be considered larry legend if he was black?... i know he was a hell of a talent, but i think he is a bit over-hyped due to his whiteness... if he was a black player that led boston to those titles, would he be held in the same light?
Yes. Larry is timeless. He was the best shooter ever then, whether he was black or white. I'm glad he was white just so we got to see his blonde stash... that thing was awesome.

In terms of talent, he was was one of the all-time greats and unbelievably clutch. Awesome shooter, great passer......just ok on defense IMO.
was he overhyped? Maybe a little. Perhaps his off-court life would have been covered a bit differently if he were black......
But Larry is a legit top 10 all time NBA player. Probably in the top 5 if you're talking non-centers.

Jordan
Wilt/Russel/Kareem/Shaq/Duncan
Magic
Oscar
Bird
(you can put the centers in any order you want)

I HATED the Celtics growing up when Larry was playing and couldn't stand Bird. I don't think he was ever overrated or overhyped. There may have been a little extra buzz about him because he was white but you can't argue the facts.
He was the best player on one of the best teams of all time.
He is one of the clutchest players ever.
He may be the best shooter ever.
IMO he was one of the 3 best passers ever (Magic and Stockton).
Averaged 24-10-6 on 50% shooting for his career playing 38 minutes per game.

Lebron will be on just about everyone's list in a few years.
first player to ever make me consider I might see someone better than Jordan in my lifetime.

He'd still be an icon and beloved in Boston (and everywhere people appreciate great basketball), but it'd be crazy to say the sight of a white guy who could outplay 99% of his contemporaries didn't help the legend a bit.

James is going to be a stud, but I will hold off judgement until I see if he can win a title. Jordan made the people around him better. His Bulls dominated with no one. Look what happened to Pippen when Jordan was gone. Jordan made Pippen a star. Can James do the same? If yes he is on the same field as Jordan. If no then he is just a great player, but not Jordan.
