How does Spo get a vote for best coach in NBA and Thibs gets zero. Weird. I always find these things interesting.

Was this trade always on the cards? It seemed to pop out of nowhere to me.

As soon as Harden rejected the Thunder's 4 year/$53 million offer the Thunder chose to shop him. I'm sure they had several scenarios in mind. They just didn't tell everyone about them.

I really think the Thunder should have made one more run this season before trading Harden. I don't like anything about this move for them.

im not sure how he could be "devastated" by the trade. he turned down 52m over 4 years. you really think that team is going to pay max money to three players but the deals for serge and the old man?

dont want to be surprised? sign the deal. takes the element of surprise out of the equation

We'll see how it plays out. Not well for the immediate future but they may develop some cheaper players to fit.

Me too. Will be interesting to see how the C's additions mesh with the old players.

 Will have to tune in late to avoid watching the Heat get their rings

This should be one of the better seasons in awhile. Lots of story lines and comebacks to look forward to. The Lakers game tonight will be intriguing as well.

Harden was the guy complaining about his shots after the game 1 win in the finals last year right? I think they will be alright without him and he is an alpha dog who needs to be on his own.

The problem is too many borderline, and some not even close to, star players think they deserve max or close to max salaries. The Sixers are going to run into this problem with Jrue Holiday. They tried signing him, and he turned down their offers. There were rumors swirling around last year that he wants 15 million a year when this contract is up. He isn't close to a player that deserves that kind of contract. I think he is a really good player and I love having him on my team, but not for that $. I think this is what the league wants with the new luxury tax penalties, for teams to be more reluctant to keep signing marginal players to big contracts and to spread out the talent among more teams.

youre out of practice james, hopefully the board can forgive you

i agree, marginal players to good players want the max and while i cant blame them for wanting as much as they can get teams have to be logical and just say no. but if they dont sign a (re) sign a player than its a PR cluster with the fans and local media.

harden is not worth more than 52m to any team other than OKC when he is in the game with KD and RW. when he played while those two sat he was virtually ineffective.

Cause and effect. I think what you're saying is a symptom of the problem, which is that teams around the NBA keep handing out max deals to players who aren't worth it. They only think they should get one too because of the caliber of other players who get them. Compared to other max deal guys Harden "deserves" one as well. As long as teams are willing to give above average players max deals, players will rightfully keep demanding them.

I still think the Thunder were way too close to a championship to do something that drastic.

All they have to do is just not offer these deals. It's kind of silly really. On one hand, they know the guys aren't going to be worth it. IE. Joe Johnson, but on the other they know guys like Joe will get you into the post season, deep even, he just won't win you a damn thing.

Eventually that guy you signed to a max deal is going to get you fired, even though you may keep a job for a a year or two longer.

Yeah for too long they threw around ridiculous contracts to undeserving players. The league responded with the new cap rules and now teams have to be more frugal with their contracts. That means the stacked teams can't afford to pay for the talent they have...so they offer reasonable contracts to players who still want more money so they go to the teams that can afford them. I think it's good for the league in the long run.

I think we're looking at the same thing happening to MLB in a few years.
