He wasn't. Cano was the captain of the team. He chose the gentleman from the Angels over Butler after apparently saying he would take Butler.

Upton was the fan favorite last year also left out of the "competition" I believe it was Fielder last year that was the subject of the locals wrath.

Bottom line, the locals were the ones in the stands booing (standing up for thier guy) not really a big deal either way. It certainly wasn't sad or rude.

I see.

Either way. does Butler have any reason to be there? Butler is slugging .487 and Trumbo is slugging .608

Other than that the stadium full of fans in attendance wanted to see him? No, absolutely not.

I thought Cano handled it really well afterward as well.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/allstar12/story/ ... ano-booing

Quote:
The booing of beleaguered Home Run Derby captain Robinson Cano finally had faded by Tuesday afternoon. But the aftermath could cause Major League Baseball to consider a new rule to include at least one hometown slugger in future Home Run Derbies, commissioner Bud Selig said Tuesday.

The booing of Cano was inspired by his failure to pick Kansas City All-Star Billy Butler for the Derby after pledging earlier this month to include a Royal. Last year's National League captain, Prince Fielder, received similar treatment in Phoenix for not picking Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton.

So Selig conceded those displays of "hometown loyalty" could spark changes to head off similar outbursts in future Derbies.

"We'll talk about this [potential rule change]," Selig said during his annual session with the Baseball Writers Association of America. "While I understand [the feelings of fans in] Kansas City ... I felt very badly last night. I felt badly last year for Prince. This was tough."

It wouldnt be a horrible rule change, to have to include a hometown player... I still like the old 60's "Home Run Derby" tv show better than the current format...

best shot of the night was Trumbo's Trumbomb ontop of the Royals Hall of Fame in his first round... ya got Cops standing up there like WTF was that? sniper? no, just a a Trumbomb

Agreed. I would have loved to see Starlin Castro rep the NL if it were at Wrigley.

yeah, it is only an exhibition, I was at the derby in Milwaukee (not the infamous tied all-star game though) and the place went nuts for Sexon. Barry Bonds hit a home run in batting practice before that derby, that hit the top right corner of Miller Parks scoreboard... and it was still climbing when it hit. by far the most impressive ball ive ever seen hit (even if it was with the juice and maybe even Sosa's "for the fans" corked bat" freaking missle

I bet Smoak would hit about 20 at Safeco.

the twins could get the all star game in '14 and they could very well have no one who could hit over 20hrs in a season. yes it'd be good for local fans who are there, but really... who would want to see that. certainly not the 99.9% of the rest of the country. think macro here, guys.

the captain thing is a cool idea. if they get booed- they get booed. they get booed and catcalled all the time- at least 81 games a year! what's one more. they can handle it. quit being a god damn reactionary bitch selig. i know that's tough.

Is it really that much different than batting practice?

depends on the hitter / swing, some guys, Griffey, Prince, Big Mac come to mind, just get natural lift in their swing and can hit home runs... other guys might hit alot of home runs within games, but theyre more of line drive hitters who hit home runs, so they get to a derby and TRY to get elevation by over swinging. I know Josh Hamilton said it really screwed him up after the one in Yankee stadium. And on the flip side, Hank Aaron, who was NEVER known for long home runs (infact you hear more stories about SS's jumping up and trying to catch his line drive home runs) used to dominate HR Derbys... so theres really no way to tell who's swing will get screwed up and whos it wont.
