I love Neil Young
For many reasons, he actually bumped Radiohead in the last few months for me. Neil Young writes gorgeous lyrics and there is a certain honesty there can be rarely found in other bands or other artists. Dylan had it, so do a few others, but not very many. I simply adore his lyrics, the way he sings about Americana, his style makes me wanna be out on the frontier. Mountains, hills, rivers, canyons, etc. Really beautiful stuff, its so eloquent and the lyrics imitate the natural beauty he describes; he combines it with this personal sense of longing but so well spoken that lots of other people can relate to. The ballads are equally gorgeous, look at anything off Harvest or After the Gold Rush, just really sadly beautiful, the way he writes about love. His political stances never seem ridiculous or radical or out of line. And he practices what he preaches, he never really "sold out" either. He does his own thing, he's been around for nearly 4 decades and has very rarely indulged in stupid trends.
Musically, his stuff is great too, its so diverse. He's obviously an awesome guitar player but some of his acoustic stuff has a certain grace goes nicely with the music.
Sorry, I know this was short and written kind of like a lame high school essay, but I'm bored and South Park is on.
So I hereby christen this the Favorite Artist thread.
