Mutations is tremendous. One of my favorite albums of the 1990's.

Modern Guilt does sound strangely monochromatic for a Danger Mouse record. The second Gnarls Barkley album came out just a couple months prior, so maybe he wasn't giving it its full attention. I do like quite a few of the songs, though, especially "Modern Guilt," "Youthless," and "Walls." I'd probably score it higher than a C+, but it took me a while to get there.

Sea Change and The Information bore the living shit out of me. Everything else is A-OK in my book. I loved Modern Guilt...really hit the spot for me.

Not long after "The Information" came out, I was driving around our neon-lit downtown while it was pouring down rain. I'll always associate the album with that night--bar signs flickering everywhere, people frantically hurrying around trying to seek shelter, little else visible except head lights, brake lights, and stop lights--a frenzied influx of stimuli that you can't hope to process in any kind of coherent manner. That's kind of how the album sounds to me--exciting and vibrant, but also jittery and claustrophobic. I think "Cellphone's Dead" and "We Dance Alone" are my two favorites--infectious and fun but also kind of melancholy.

"The Information" may be one of my top 2-3 records of his. I don't know, I know to many it seems like the runt of the litter, but it just really works for me. The sprawl of the album really works in it's favor, not sonically, but in the feel like I get of the album it reminds me of New Adventures in Hi-Fi from R.E.M. This kind of dark foreboding that has you peeking around every corner and scraping the mildew while looking for songs.

I really really like Guerilito for some reason as well which doesn't seem to be mentioned a lot.

I would definitely have Seachange and Mutations as my 1 and 2 now. After that it's hard to say with any surety, although Midnight Vultures is a damn fine piece of art.

In terms of songs Nobody's Fault But Mine is probably his best in my view. I'd also now include Deadweight, Devil's Haircut and maybe The Information or Volcano in my top ten.

It's interesting to see how your tastes develop and change over time.

The Information: another favorite. this album doesn't seem to get much love among Beck fans, but i think it's engrossing. i think it's the perfect distillation of his funky, electronic side.[/quote]
i can confirm this

The reason I dislike Sea Change and The Information is because most of the songs just aren't there for me. No melodies or hooks that keep me coming back. It's all "vibe" over content. The best song from the Sea Change sessions was a Japan-only track...one of those "let's pull the best songs and release them as b-sides" deals.

I had the privilege of seeing Beck on the weekend. He was playing with his backing band from Seachange, which made the show doubly thrilling for me. The performance was flawless. Beck is so great.

after owning (and loving) only Odelay and Guero for years, i finally decided to jump head-first into the rest of Beck's discgraphy.

i've been spinning the newly-acquired albums (even Stereopathic Soulmanure and One Foot in the Grave) for the past week.

Mellow Gold: the countrified acid-rock shtick works well for him, but it's not my favorite Beck personality. i give the album points for being so consistent.

One Foot in the Grave: on first listen, i was underwhelmed. i don't necessarily require an all-over-the-map genre mix-up from Beck (see Sea Change below), but there was a monotonous quality to this that i found suffocating. there's a lot of lyrical gems to admire. some interesting arrangements. just need more.

Mutations: instantly a favorite. a balance between the stylistic indulgences of Odelay and the plaintive singer-songwriter vibe of Sea Change. if i wanted to give an album to somebody to convince them what Beck is all about, i'd give them Mutations rather than Odelway. it's just so breezy and virtuosic.

Midnite Vultures: maybe it's my love of R&B and funk talking, but i like this one. a great party record. who knew the guy who recorded OFITG could pull off such a convincing Prince impression.

Sea Change: beautiful. the other, more urgent, varied, and punchy albums kept my focus off of this one for a while, but it really got under my skin. i can't believe i haven't listened to this sooner. there is a lot of interesting musical flourishes (the end of Paper Tiger, the string arrangements in Lonesome Tears, and the discordant crescendoes in Sunday Sun) that i didn't expect from the lone, ostensible "morose" Beck album. for years, i had only heard of this as the "acoustic break-up album." that's selling it far short.

The Information: another favorite. this album doesn't seem to get much love among Beck fans, but i think it's engrossing. i think it's the perfect distillation of his funky, electronic side.

Modern Guilt: solid album, but doesn't have the most captivating instrumentation. i only listened to it once and my attention was divided, so i'll need to listen again to give it a fair shake. i knew this one was produced my Danger Mouse, so i expected something more electronica/hip-hop-oriented.

Stereopathic Soulmanure: uhh, okay.

all told, there's not a single album in the bunch that i'm not going to revisit. i think Soulmanure will do well to keep me awake during long car trips.

have i told you all that i've come around on Modern Guitl? because i have. i love that one. LOVE it!
