Thanks guys. I'm writing all of this down in a little pocketbook that I carry around when I go to record stores. I can tell you right now that I've never seen Black Saint and the Sinner Lady in the used bins. I look every time!

Okay jazz heads, help me out here:
I play the hell out of this one Ornette Coleman record I have called Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation. there are two quartets playing simultaneously, one on each channel. The music is free flowing and expressive. I really enjoy it, but I want more. I'm interested in traditional jazz instruments playing non-traditional styles, so don't recommend any Fusion-era Miles Davis or anything like that. I like that stuff too, but I need more records like Ornette Coleman.
What should I look for in used bins? Also, what is Sun Ra all about? Based on this post, would I enjoy him?

I was prepared to say that the first clip you posted wasn't what I was looking for, but that opening theme was just deceiving me. I like how it stays with a driving rhythm for some pretty wild improv to contrast with it. Who is that?
This Sun Ra isn't what I'm describing regarding traditional quartet instruments, but I'm liking it. I imagine that trumpet/keyboard interplay would sound great on headphones.
If you haven't heard the Ornette Coleman I'm referring to, here's the first part of it. I wouldn't play it with cats or children around:

I have such a love/hate relationship with Ornette Coleman. I really like his work with Charlie Haden because he provides a great counterpoint to his wackiness, but I find that video you posted incredibly irritating.
I like improvisation as much as the next guy, but I think I like melody more.
Loving Alice Coltrane, spenno

Alice Coltrane, it was the first half of the title track from "Ptah the El Daoud".

It does. I can probably dig around and PM you some links if you'd like.
I know it's nowhere near what you were describing, but I had the feeling you might dig it.
There's also an album called Beyond Quantum. Milford Graves is the drummer and Braxton plays sax. It's pretty fuckin all over the place.
Yeah with William Parker on bass. That album is awesome, a great introduction to Braxton and Parker who are two living legends you will need to explore as you delve into this music.

So, what's everyone's favorite 2010 release so far? I really like Mehldau's "Highway Star". Matt Chamberlain plays drums on that one.
I actually haven't kept track of a lot of new releases other than the new Pat Metheny. I've heard great things about the Mehldau record but can't seem find it anywhere.

The 5 disc Chicago Tentet 3 Nights in Oslo release is just tremendous, one of those releases that only come around every few years. The Braxton/Hemingway Old Dogs set, the Decoy & Joe McPhee at Oto, and the Rova & Nels Cline Singers Celestial Septet are all extremely good as well.

platy, I've actually never really gotten into Metheny that much, which is surprising considering how much I love Scofield. I think I'll check out his new record.
BlueNote, I've heard a couple of good things about the Decoy/McPhee album. I'll be checking it out.

I've been listening to this a lot lately Reid, is this up your alley?
This sounds like a remix of some RPG music. Really like it.

I've been trying to get into jazz lately. I downloaded these albums today. I'm really not sure what I'm doing though. I like Coltrane's My Favorite Things. I'm totally lost when it comes to jazz.

Let me know what you think of Sketches of Spain, Monk's Dream and A Love Supreme. I think you'll thoroughly enjoy all three.
