You should pick up more. The question is do you want something more listenable, or something crazier that sounds like a hobo voodoo priest drunk on whiskey and heartbreak?

More listenable. I'm sure they go both ways from RD, and I like both styles, but for now I'd like to go the more listenable route. But I would like to know where to start when I want the crazy washboard, clangle-jangle sound again.

Just curious, but where does RD fall in the spectrum? And where should I go from here?

Rain Dogs is very critically acclaimed, and I love it. To me, he was one of the few "older" artists putting out quality records, always pushing his boundaries.

For more listenable, "The Heart of Saturday Night" is great. You will barely recognize his voice, it isn't as gruff.

For something crazier, I would go for "Alice" or even the more loony "Blood Money". He gets more crazy as we come to more recent releases but I think that these are good ways to get more into him.

Or Closing Time. I adore that album.

Really, you can't go wrong with any Waits release. A few are more 'diehard' fan friendly, like Foriegn Affairs and Nighthawks at the Diner, but it seems most people who become fans end up diehards anyway.

Personally, i think heartattack and Vine is the best thing he's done, followed closely by rain Dogs and bone machine.

I love Heartattack and Vine. I was actually going to mention that in my last post.

So I've been checking out Tom Waits. I love Closing Time, but am I the only one who thinks that Rain Dogs sounds like a complete utter mess?

Man i love Rain Dogs, i would kill to make a movie out of this album, whenever i listen to it i always get a tim burtonish feeling. But i would have to say Heart of a saturday night is my favorite Tom Waits album, probably in my top 5 all time. Lately i havent been abloe to stop listening to it.

Well, its worse in the sense that its even more an utter mess, but still a killer album.

So back to the issue at hand: Tom Waits doesn't have any bad albums or messes and he's got a fucking box set of rarities coming out. That's exciting as shit.

I used to have some of the...oh, what's the bootleg series with rarities...but I lost them years ago. Now all I have are concert boots and the Alice demos. I'm so glad to have this coming...in a cigar box, no less.

I don't know about that. I think I've heard everything he's put out with the expection of Blue Valentine and Foreign Affairs, but I'm not crazy about Swordfishtrombones. However, Soldier's Things is a beautiful song.
