Thelonious Monk-Brilliant Corners
Wayne Shorter-Speak No Evil

Let me know what you think of Sketches of Spain, Monk's Dream and A Love Supreme. I think you'll thoroughly enjoy all three.

And if you dug those, don't waste any time getting onto this:

Very good albums all. And "My Favorite Things" was the track that turned me from a casual listener into a jazz fanatic. It's the perfect bridge.

My best advice would be to give it time to sink in. Trying to listen to all that stuff at once would be major overkill, especially if you're trying to unravel the idea of jazz as a whole.

And Mingus's "Black Saint" is definitely excellent too.

Nice to see you giving Shorter a try. Speak No Evil might be my favourite Jazz record of all time

I listen to jazz most frequently when I am cooking. It's been a while since I've done either, but I've got some pasta sauce simmering at the moment and I have just enough time to come here and say that Milestones is such a good album.

What a happy accident.

I was going to burn an album to what I thought was a blank disc today and my computer ejected it because it already had music on it. The music was this previously lost but never forgotten gem:

Duke = :heartbeat:

Check out the album "Black, Brown, and Beige," if you never have. Massive stuff.

Cool. I've been looking for new places to go with him. As it stands, I only own Jungle Money and one of those two-disc "Essential" CDs that I assume is nowhere near comprehensive.

No library should be without at least a little Duke--few men have left so large a footprint in the history of American popular music. Two personal favorites are "Black, Brown, and Beige" and "Blues in Orbit," though any recommendations will only be the tip of the iceberg. His pre-LP-era material is available in dozens of different collections, but every shelf should have at least one.

1948 was the introduction of the LP record--not sure when Duke adopted the format but I assume he probably would have been among the first. A lot of what's considered his most important material comes from that pre-LP era.

Yeah, I have a lot of that pre-LP stuff. It's essential, just like the cd booklet says!

The Money Jungle post caused me to make a connection that didn't occur before, is all. You sort of remind me of him, and I believe he used to have a Mingus avatar.
