You really think early Beatles' albums like Please Please Me through Beatles for Sale are better than Exile? For me, Exile is the best album out of the two bands.

I'm gonna try a top-ten between them.

1. Exile; 2. Abbey Road; 3. The Beatles; 4. Let It Bleed 5. Sgt. Pepper's; 6. Sticky Fingers; 7. Let It Be; 8. Revolver; 9. Beggars Banquet; 10. Rubber Soul.

I also think the Rolling Stones' catalog pre-1965 might slightly edge out the Beatles over the same time-frame...but maybe not.

I love both the Beatles and the Stones, Sticky Fingers is one of my favorite albums of all time. I listen to the Beatles at the least every Sunday and toss on random Stones boots throughout the week.

So many rock 'n' roll discussions boil down to an argument between these two, Devil's Advocate adds the Who; listen to 'em all and just enjoy the fact that they did what they did.

Actually that is the radio program that got me started with the Sunday deal, but I don't listen to the radio anymore yet I have a shit-ton of bootlegs and all the albums obviously. It has stuck for a while now.

You know, man, I'd probably take my three favorite songs off any one of those albums over Exile in its entirety. For what it's worth, I don't necessarily share the very common position that the earlier Beatles stuff is "the inferior pop material"; my favorite Beatles tunes are spread out across their catalog pretty evenly, and there are very few songs on any of their officially released albums that I think are inferior to even the Stones' best songs. The Stones, in my opinion, just never remotely approached their level of tunecraft, which is more important to me than who's more "badass" or more "rock and roll," which--if you go back and read--accounts for a lot of the arguments on behalf of the Stones throughout this thread. I appreciate that the Stones' music may tap into a more primal spirit than the Beatles' did, and could possibly come across as more organic as a result, but one thing I've never heard in the Beatles' music, despite its formal "correctness," is a lack of passion. And for music that is so accessible, its ability to constantly surprise me is a feather in its cap; there are melodic twists in Paul McCartney's songs that just completely knock me out no matter how many times I hear them, where I feel like I can call the direction of every Stones song within the first ten seconds.

I think Exile represents a kind of blues-rock zenith--it manages to make a major piece of art out of a musical genre that rarely transcends its base cliches, and for that it deserves a lot of credit. I also like the loose, rave-up feel to it--even though I'm pretty sure it's not the case (if memory serves, very little of it was recorded in unison by the band), some of those songs like "Tumbling Dice" and "Loving Cup" have a marvelous, maximalist feel to them--like they were the product of all-night jam sessions by Mick and Keith and 50 of their richest, drunkest, off-key rock star friends who all brought their guitars. Though I haven't heard nearly all of them, I can't imagine a Stones album I'd like more (barring a compilation). But when I really cut through the bull, I still find most of its songs to be half-cooked boogies based around obvious blues riffs. As songs, which I care about foremost, even the best songs on Exile are middle-tier by Beatles' standards.

The Rolling Stones - Some Girls: Live in Texas '78

The Rolling Stones 1978 tour of the USA in support of that year's Some Girls album is considered by fans to be one of their very best. The tour followed immediately on the release of the Some Girls album and by the time the band arrived in Texas in mid-July the album had hit the No.1 spot on the US charts. The tour took a back to basics approach, with the band and their music very much at the forefront and little or no elaborate staging. Filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on July 18th, 1978, this concert is typical of the tour with the Rolling Stones delivering a raw, energetic performance in front of a crowd who are clearly loving the show. Many of the tracks from Some Girls are included in the live set with a sprinkling of Stones classics from earlier albums. Originally shot on 16mm film, the footage has been carefully restored and the sound remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack tapes. This is undeniably the Rolling Stones at the peak of their form.
