If you like Closing Time, check out Heart of Saturday Night, Nighthawks at the Diner, and Small Change.

I've never really liked small change (although a few songs are stellar--esp. tom taubert's blues) and nighthawks. HoSN and closing time are excellent though

San Diego Serenade was in the short list of wedding song contenders but I gave it up in the end. We didn't have that kind of relationship

nighthawks and small change are the albums that really put waits over the top for me. i like all his stuff and listen to other albums more often but if he never did those two i wouldn't consider him one of my absolute favorite artists.

you just haven't listened to it enough... i felt the same way the first couple times i listened to it/waits

I couldn't get through one full listen. :?

If your still reading this thread, listen to 'downtown train' a few times on repeat, to ease you into the style of the album. It's certainly the most mainstream thing on the record, the not the best song, once your into it.

Nobody likes Tom Waits on first listen. Rain Dogs is actually pretty accessible.

Incorrect. I loved Tom Waits on first listen. "Closing Time" was my first and remains one of my favorite albums. I will admit that a lot of his work takes some getting used to, though.

To understand what is being said here one must understand that Closing Time and Heart of Saturday Night are not actually made by the artist Tom Waits. They were made by a young man who happened to have that name, whom the real Tom Waits killed and ate to gain power, sexual capacity, and the respect of his tin pan alley cohorts..

I agree. After hearing the banter before Better Off Without A Wife, and The Piano Has Been Drinking, I knew there was something special about this guy.

Blu Valentine is easily my least favorite Tom Waits record, and the only one besides Foreign Affairs that wouldn't at least make my top 200.

It's an ok disc, but nothing compared to his other work.

And Sight for Sore Eyes. But it's still a mediocre record. Good thing the man has 6 masterpieces where even the best artists usually have 1 or 2.
