I'm not the guy to ask. I love that Coltrane record, btw.

Go with Miles Davis's Milestones, or if you are feeling really wild, Coltrane's A Love Supreme. Also, I can't recommend Mingus Ah Um enough.

In my limited experience, I always find myself going back to Charles Mingus.

I prefer small group jazz, too, but there are exceptions. Mingus has always been one of those guys on the periphery of my listening, rather than at the core of it, but he's made some marvelous music.

Black Saint is my favorite jazz album and one of the crowning achievements of modern music up until this point.

Some of the best liner notes of all-time, too.

They were written by his psychiatrist, which is fitting since the album is basically beautiful insanity in musical form.

We're using that as one of pre-show pieces for my play, love it.

Yeah, that's a marvel, generally regarded as one of Coltrane's very best ballad performances.

Another one of my favorites, from a year later (Coltrane moved insanely fast in those days):

I was hoping that YouTube had a good clip of "My Favorite Things" from Newport '63, too, but the only one I found is split into two parts. Oh well--here's the first one. In my opinion, this is one of the boiling points of Coltrane's career--and his crowning achievement on soprano sax:
