Greatest hits complaitions can be good to introduce yourself to a band/artist. I find though that I end up buying the albums anyway so I dont really like them.

OK I edit my stance to saying greatest hits can be a good introduction to a band, but I still think they are an evil creation.

However if you like a band, but only buy the greatest hits does that really make you a fan?

I think if you like a bands greatest hits you should def. look into getting their regular studio albums.

Ah, I forgot about SP's Greatest Hits. It was actually a very well put together compilation; the addition of 'Drown' was what really made the album for me. Plus, I like how they released it with two different versions so if you didn't want the bonus rarities disc you didn't have to buy it. I actually have two copies because they wouldn't let me return the single-disc one after Christmas.

Yeah, I forgot that one too. Great compilation.

This is what greatest hits albums are for. You summed it up perfectly for all the anti-greatest hits people. They arent for dorks like us who own every CD plus boots and discuss the band online. They are for casual fans and they are a perfect way to get someone that likes daughter and thinks evenflow rocks or reads the back and realizes they enjoy 5 or 6 of these songs and buys it. If it helps others get into PJ then why are we all complaining, ya know? I thought we loved PJ and wanted it to spread to other people and this is the best way to do that. Why can't we realize that this isnt for us its for a more casual fan and since most of us collect we will all put our foot in our mouths and prolly put up the 17 bucks, 30 vinyl and buy it.

Yah, you can be a fan without owning every CD. So to be a PJ fan do you have to know all of the drummers or own all the CD's? nope. As long as you enjoy the music you can be a fan without shedding all the bucks. There are different levels of fandom (is that correct, prolly not) we are flirting with the diehard/obsessed border but i dont think you need to own multiple CD's to be a fan.

I have a problem with taking songs out of context, though. With bands that are more single-oriented, fine. But then look at Pink Floyd's "Echoes." Can you really enjoy "The Great Gig in The Sky" without the build-up from time? I'd just prefer to own the albums, but I understand your point.

It all depends on the band. Big time. There are bands that are Greatest Hits bands... and nothing else.

Creedance Clearwater Revival
Steve Miller Band
The Eagles

Honestly, does anyone own an album from those three bands, save Hotel California (and maybe hell freezes over)?
