Scripted, pre-wheel portion: 1. I Hope You're Happy Now- This is always a great opener 2. Tear Off Your Own Head (It's a Doll Revolution) 3. Mystery Dance 4. Uncomplicated 5. Radio Radio
Wheel portion: 6. 45- Great way to start the wheel festivities! It would've been a downer to start with Shipbuilding or something like that 7. This Wheel's On Fire (Dylan cover)/The River In Reverse/Wheel reprise 8. Living In Paradise- !!!! When was the last time this was played live? I'd love to hear The Imposters playing this 9. The Other Side of Summer 10. Accidents Will Happen
--Spinner lands on "Time" "jackpot tile" - How cool would it have been to get "It's Time" from All This Useless Beauty? I don't think EC likes it very much since he hasn't played it since the ATUB tour. 11. Strict Time 12. Out of Time (Rolling Stones cover) 13. Next Time Round 14. Man Out of Time -My favorite EC song
15. The Element Within Her
--Spinner lands on "Girl" jackpot tile - Aw, no "Party Girl"? 16. This Year's Girl 17. Girls Talk - Love this little song. I don't understand why he doesn't play it more. 18. Girl (Beatles cover)
19. (I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea 20. Beyond Belief
--Elvis introduces the band, rigs the wheel to land on "Napoleon's Choice" 21. Pump It Up/Busted (Ray Charles cover) (strange piano version) - I've seen youtube videos of him doing "Pump it Up" in 6/8 time... kind of strange, but I imagine you have to vary it up to keep a song fresh if you've been playing it for 35 years
Encore 1 (all scripted, no wheel): 22. A Slow Drag With Josephine 23. God's Comic - Did he play this with the band or solo? Great song. Edit: Nevermind, just saw the video online. Coolio 24. Alison/Tears of a Clown (Smokey Robinson cover)
Encore 2 (Elvis rigs the wheel to land on "Beauty or Beast," and the audience decides whether the show's finale is "beauty" or "beast"--they choose beast, of course: 25. Rocking Horse Road/Wild Thing (Troggs cover)/Rocking Horse Road 26. Waiting for the End of the World/Gloria (Them cover) 27. Watching the Detectives 29. (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding/Purple Rain (Prince cover)/Peace Love reprise - Just awesome
Ugh, that sounds like a great time, KD. At first I thought the Spinning Songbook idea was a little stupid but apparently the shows have been amazing.
Elvis introduced "Paradise" by saying "A rare selection indeed!" or something like that. Then, oddly, the next spinner landed on it again, and he said something like, "I know Chicago is a great place to live, but I'm not playing a song called 'Living in Paradise' here twice." Then just before launching into it, he said: "Livin' in paradise, babe--that's a direct quote from the front row." As is characteristic of the Imposters, this was a much looser version than the original, but Davey did a faithful job replicating Bruce's signature bass part. It's my favorite song off TYM--I was thrilled they landed on it.
I was hoping "Sulky Girl" would have been included in the "girl" portion, but I was glad they finally got around to "Man Out of Time" in the "time" portion. I'm interested to see which songs are included underneath the other "jackpot" tiles. Very cool idea.
I remember reading that Tom Waits was a guest MC on one of the '86 songbook shows, and it definitely seemed like Elvis had him in mind while he was handling ringmaster duties. The man really is fabulously entertaining; the spectacle itself would have been enough to entertain even someone who had minimal interest in Costello's music (i.e. my wife). Each contestant was given free reign of the stage during their chosen song--some chose to dance in the "cage" but many just sat at the bar and enjoyed their drinks and their awesome view.
I was hoping for a few more tunes off the new album, but listening to it on the way home I can understand how only a few of them--and really, not many of the best ones--would have really suited the Imposters. "Church Underground" was on the wheel but not played. There was also a tile for "Stella Hurt" that I kept crossing my fingers for, but no luck. One thing that huge wheel makes you realize is just how many truly amazing songs this guy has; soon as we took our seats I started reading the titles and thinking to myself, "Oh man, I hope they do that. And that. And that. And that. Oh, that too. Etc." A great night.
Thanks for those videos, by the way. Do you know if there's still an online setlist resource for EC? His official site was keeping pretty good tabs on it for a while, but last time I checked it was a few years out of date.

I’m very sorry to have to postpone our date at the Wellmont Theatre but I would rather disappoint our friends and tickets-holders than cheat them with an inferior show. Having unfortunately contracted bronchitis, the success of the Chicago Theatre show on the 15th of May was in large part thanks to the wonderful crowd and our many willing and good-humoured participants in the Spectacular Spinning Songbook. They inspired 2 and 1/2 hour performance well beyond its occasionally audible vocal limitations. Against the express advice of a doctor but mindful that people had traveled from as far as Cleveland and Lexington for the show in Cincinnati, our show there went ahead on the 16th of May. We enjoyed an incredible welcome of Taft Theatre crowd, my voice rallied for another show or more than two hours but this was at a cost. To proceed further without adequate recovery would risk cancellation of the remaining dates of “The Revolver Tour.” We will make every effort to re-schedule the Wellmont Theatre date when “The Revolver” tour rolls out again in not too distant future. Once again, I send my regrets and apologies for any disappointment and inconvenience. Yours through music. Elvis Costello a.k.a. Napoleon Dynamate – M.C. of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook.

Hmm.
Right now, probably "Blood & Chocolate"? But I also really love "This Year's Model", "Imperial Bedroom", "King of America", "North" and "National Ransom". I don't know. That's always a difficult question for me to answer.

Of the one's you mentioned, I've only heard This Year's Model. I might need to pick up Imperial Bedroom as that's one I always in the record stores around here. That's the only early album of his I don't have.
