...but today, I finally reached my breaking point.

I watched a local group called The Manichean play a free in-store at Cactus Music The set started off nice enough. Sweet, pensive acoustic guitar chords were augmented with some light effects from an electric guitar hooked up to some sort of atmospheric peddle. After a few measures of music like this, the singer entered the song in the most surprising way possible. Mingled with the rest of the audience, he began shouting proclamations as he walked towards the stage. He sang with a beautiful falsetto, and everything seemed right (even if a little outlandish). The set rolled on, and it was fine. Wasn't really my favorite in-store performance in the world, but I had told myself that I'd check them out at Summer Fest next year if they played.

Then, it happened. After a few verses of some song or another, the singer left the mic to solo. On a fucking typewriter. What he was typing, I'll never know. I'm sure that it was some meta commentary on the art of performance, and I'm sure that he was completely sincere in doing so, but enough is enough. I can't listen to this sort of thing forever. It's time to close this particular chapter of this all-encompassing musical journey I've been on since God knows when. Good luck, friends.

Hey Reid. I've actually seen this done in large orchestras. It seems gimmicky but there's something strangely fulfilling about the short, clattering sound of a typewriter-- taptaptap, ding! zzzip. But that could be nostalgia talking.

Maybe he just had an idea? Sounds interesting. Never seen it done.

So not only does it draw attention to itself, but it's been done before. I definitely hate it now.

No, I don't think playing a typewriter is an artform. But there's a famous piece by Leroy Anderson called "The Typewriter" that does it pretty well. It's a light, humorous little piece that puts the typewriter "soloist" to good use:


There's also this other decidedly darker piece by Krysztof Penderecki which also incorporates a typewriter, but in a more "menacing", foreboding effect:


It's not nearly as fun.
