Going on a road trip around the holidays and would love to listen to something funny in the car (after the kids fall asleep, of course). Recommendations?

I've never been able to get into comedy albums, because I can't imagine the same joke being funny after multiple listens. Am I in the minority here?

That's kinda true. Once you know a bit so well you're no longer laughing as hard as you once were, but I'm still willing to listen for the vibe of hearing it again and listening to an audience crack up, and occasionally, something shines through and even though you've heard it two dozen times before, you still can't help but laugh.

Its always fun to listen to them with someone else and see their first time reactions. A really good comic will bring you in everytime. Mitch Hedberg is great because he brings you into his headspace. its a journey of sorts.

We had a field trip with school last February and one of our professors who was driving had the premium spotify. Anyway, we listed to Louie's Hilarious on the long haul from Kansas to Denver. It was great.

Then I made the car listen to SIlkworm's Lifestyle. It was even greater.

I'm really not trying to pick a fight here, honest, but there are few things worse to me than when a friend forwards me a comedy bit just to "see what I think" about it. I feel so much pressure to like it, and I feel terrible when I can't muster up any more reaction than polite laughter (which too often is all that I can do because how can any comedian live up to the greatness that an overzealous fan has built up for them, even this board's collective swoon for M. Hedberg?)

I love his cheap download system on his website. Listening to Beacon at work right now.

you guys need to continue participate in the OB cover contest.

and then Reid needs to get over his inability to find laughter in comedic genius.*

I didn't say that at all. I'm simply questioning the utility of comedy albums.

Comedy should happen organically is all I'm saying.

You do feel kind of cheated when you see a show then hear the "album" later and realize everything is completely scripted. I could understand your disappointment.

Yeah, that's the same way I felt after my first Todd Snider concert. I was incredibly disheartened to not only hear the same between-song stories featured on his live albums being told at my show, but to also see the good friend that introduced the songwriter to me gleefully mouthing the words to these rehearsed monologues along with him.
